June Issue

This months Monthly AGS Competition topic

Guidelines were set by: TGames

Ice must be incorporated into your game in any form. Perhaps the setting is an icy tundra. Maybe the player is searching for an icy treat. Maybe a character is made out of ice. The topic is open to be interpreted as you wish and the possibilities are endless, as long as ice is somehow in your game.

There is no restriction on art you can use in this competition. Previously made art assets and public art assets can be used.

The AGS World Cup 2018 Prediction League
The beautiful game!
No, I don’t mean Phantasmagoria.
I mean Soccer.

This June and July, World Cup 2018 Russia will be taking over our TVs. So you might as well get involved. After a successful World Cup 2014 and Euro ‘16, the AGS Community Prediction League is back. Make predictions, win points, become a champion. The format is a little stripped back this time around. 64 games, 64 guesses. No wildcards and no deductions for missing predictions. What remains is the double points in the knockout stages and triple points for the World Cup Final.

What’s new is the shiny website, containing online prediction forms, the rules, a Twitter feed for updates and a live version of the AGS Prediction League Table.

To get involved, head on over to the main thread, or go straight to the shiny website and click ‘Make your predictions’.

Good luck and happy predicting.

Only the Good Die Young
by .M.M.

Full disclosure: I haven't finished this game yet because it's longer and harder (and way more fun) than it looks from the screenshots. Only the Good Die Young is an action RPG set in the Wild West. All the spaghetti tropes are here: saloons, railroads, outlaws, bandits and towns that ain't big enough for two people.

The RPG element revolves around building up your handgun, rifle and melee skills as well as buying and selling clothes and upgrading weapons. Combat is straight up shooting and stabbing. And it's hard. The controls are quite fiddly but that probably says less about the game's design and more about my lack of experience playing PC RPGs.

There is also even a two-player duel mode where you can battle it out with a friend using a joystick, but unfortunately I don't have one... and I don't have a joystick either.

Story -wise, it's pretty simple. Your character is looking for his brother and his search takes him to a village where he ends up under the employ of a powerful railroad lord, who gets you to do some morally-questionable jobs. On top of that, you're also taken on by the sheriff to help catch outlaws while he sits behind a desk the whole time.

It's a really fun game and I can't believe it's gone six years without a rating. There are one or two drawbacks though. The complete lack of music, for one. There are other sound effects but no ambiance or music. Also, art-wise, it really could have done with a lick of paint. On top of that, while the English translation (from its original Czech) is mostly pretty spot-on, there are typos everywhere. A little bit of proffreading goes along way.

Still, well worth a go.
That's all for today. I really want to abolish that list of games no one has rated but I can't do it myself. I'll be back next time with some reviews of games beginning with P, but until then, I need your help getting rid of these Os:

OceanSpirit Dennis 2 beta
Oceanspirit Dennis: The Terror of the Ice Princess
Oldman's Quest
Omnipotent Tarot
OSD - LGS - Demo
OSD LAST BOSS Dennis Returns 1.5 HD ReMIX
OSD vs Cloud Strife

See you next time.
