Introducing our first Counselor Spotlight...
Dorian "Uke" Lumarque!
"Uke" is a second year Sophomore counselor with a huge heart of gold and a beautiful smile! Here is what he has to say:
What are you up to for Winter Break?
I've been relaxing at home with family this break and taking time to rest up after a difficult quarter. At the same time, I'm getting organized and planning ahead to make winter quarter great! I'm also looking forward to exploring Antelope Canyon in northern Arizona this break, either with family or friends!
Favorite Kesem moment?
Aside from the countless moments with campers that hold a special place in my heart, one of the most memorable moments was being "Jabba the Uke" at our Star wars fashion show :)
It's such a meaningful cause - when I first heard about Camp Kesem, I was touched just knowing that there was a specific organization working to improve the lives of children in families dealing with cancer. Since becoming a counselor, I've been surrounded by incessant love, and my enthusiasm for the group grows the more I realize the positive impact we have on the families involved. A special light emanates from within all the Kesem counselors - I'm so fortunate to be able to share space with them both at Stanford and at camp. Most of all, I love the kids I've been able to work with! Their unique perspective on life and natural ability to love brings me great happiness, and I take away little lessons on life each time I'm with them.
Cancer isn't a fun disease - but it does have this unique ability to bring people together. And it's by fostering this togetherness that the worries of the world are stripped away and we are allowed the gift of living wholly in the present. Kesem creates an environment that does just that; and it helps all involved, regardless of age or background, realize great joy in the company of others. That's what makes it magical.
