FEBRUARY - UPDATE / URGENT

Hi All - A little early this month. A couple of reminders first! The Union Street consultation takes place TOMORROW at 68 Union Street from 4 - 7pm and also on Tuesday/Wednesday the consultation for the Old Fire Brigade building consultation is on. We at Boroughood HQ are not against (re)development (the new designs for Marlborough Playground are up - case 15/AP/4732), however sadly the developers always seem to pick the architecturally interesting buildings in the area to try and demolish, and they are at it again! See Below!
URGENTLY we need to you to write your objections! Sadly an application has been submitted to Southwark Council to demolish the above building at 153 Borough High Street (opposite the Sainsbury's and the bus stop). It is one of the few buildings of its type still standing in the area. At present it also houses some of the last remaining independent businesses (not chain food shops) on the street. The upper floor is a photographic studio (one of the few daylight photographic studios in Zone 1!!). You have likely seen the work produced from this studio even if you don't realise it.

So what do they propose to put here, I hear you ask?? Yes a 7 story (2 stories above the standard on the street), 70 room hotel and ground floor fast food restaurants. Again the heart and uniqueness of Borough is being eroded. This is not something that will truly benefit the local community. Will this improve the area or detract from it. Ask yourself.

In the process we will lose good independent businesses for yet another corporate chain (travelodge, Premier Inn). It isn't an interesting design, higher than most of the buildings on that side of the street and importantly soulless.

The Council left it to the last minute to list the application on the portal (right at the end of the consultation) so we need your help quickly! As applications close either today or the 5th of February (there is a discrepancy in the paperwork vs Online) so we don't know. Please write ASAP.

Furthermore, the consultation letters were registered with NONE of the local residents, only a handful of nearby businesses!

Please also send your objections to Adele Morris and email:
