Social Democrats to Field 14 Candidates in Upcoming General Election

The Social Democrats have confirmed today that a total of 14 declared candidates will contest the upcoming General Election across constituencies in Cork, Limerick, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath East and Dublin.

Whilst Councillor Gerry Warnock had originally intended to contest the Longford/Westmeath constituency, he has had to withdraw for personal and professional reasons but remains a committed supporter of the Social Democrats.

Speaking today, Social Democrats co-leader Róisín Shortall said:

“We made a very conscious decision early on that we would focus on the quality of our candidates rather than the quantity. As a new party determined to build a real political alternative in Ireland we feel it is of vital importance to have the right people with us at this pivotal time in the building of the party.  We are disappointed that Gerry cannot contest this time around but we understand his role as Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council is extremely time-consuming as is his role of father to two young children. We look forward to continuing to work closely with Gerry in the future.”

“The upcoming election is a significant opportunity for Irish society and we are confident that our 14 candidates have what it takes to make an impact on polling day.”
