Social Democrats Call for Directly Elected Mayor

Ahead of this evening’s Dublin City Council meeting to ‘elect’ a new Lord Mayor, Social Democrats Councillor Gary Gannon has repeated his calls for a directly elected executive Mayor for Dublin.

Speaking on his way to the meeting Cllr. Gannon said:
“For too long now we have allowed the undemocratic process of mayoral elections to go unchallenged. The positions, while voted for by the sitting Councillors, are for the most part, pre-agreed via backroom deals and arrangements based on party politics. ”

“I believe a process that would result in a directly elected Mayor would ensure democratic accountability whilst also ensuring that the role focuses on laying out a real vision for our city rather than simply creating a ribbon-cutting functionary. At present the role is primarily a ceremonial role – at significant cost to the tax payer. If we were to move to a situation where we have a democratically elected Mayor I believe we could dispense with a lot of the bureaucracy and politicking at local Government level and expedite decisions that are above party politics and are in the best interests of the city.”
