Get The Facts About Kidney Stones

Each year, more than half a million people visit an emergency department because of kidney stone pain. Kidney stones are very common and usually, people only know they have kidney stones because of the pain.

Some kidney stones can be as small as a grain of sand. Others can grow as large as a golf ball. Smaller kidney stones may pass relatively easy, but other times passing a kidney stone can be extremely painful.

People can pass small stones by drinking a lot of water and taking over-the-counter pain medication, however, stones that are stuck in the urinary tract or cause complications may need to be surgically removed. The good news is that most kidney stones do not cause any long-term effects.

Genetic Testing for Prostate Cancer

A diagnosis of prostate cancer immediately leaves patients and families asking many questions.  Today, we are fortunate to have genetic testing available that can help us more accurately answer some of these tough questions.

At Urology Associates we offer two types of genetic testing for prostate cancer patients. The first is testing the biopsy of a cancerous prostate tumor. With this test, we can look at the tumor’s genetic make-up and determine how quickly the cancer is growing.

We also offer genetic testing that is performed by testing the blood to determine if you have any DNA that makes you more susceptible to cancer or if your family members may be at a higher risk to develop cancer.
