On Wednesday afternoon, CoD’s Carey Goldstein hosted a webinar entitled “How to Communicate with Dignity Effectively.”
The webinar covered a communication tool, SEAL (Stop, Explain, Affirm, Lock), from Owning Up, as a strategy to have hard conversations and communicate effectively in various settings. Tools to navigate difficult conversations, whether dealing with confrontation or engaging in a healthy discussion about hot topics, are vital.
In the webinar, Carey provided a breakdown of the SEAL communication model, a discussion of the potential challenges with teaching young people this communication method, and practical steps to help young people navigate challenging conversations. She identified three ways to use SEAL:
- Helping with student-to-student conflict
- Supporting a young person who's been emotional hijacking
- Communicating with other adults
