The Young Writer's Journey

Dear <<First Name>>,

It was Job who wrote: "Oh that my words were written! Oh that they were inscribed in a book! That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!" (Job 19:23-24).

Words are powerful legacies and Job was right: words are permanent. The words we write can express what we love, what we hate, or what afflicts us. Our stories are already written by God, and likewise, we become His instrument. Let's use our iron pens to walk with Him til the end.

No matter what stage you find yourself in on your writing journey, we hope these articles inspire you to endure the race and to persevere:
  • Joe Bunting of The Write Practice lists one way to become a better writer: be specific. Details, moments, and dialogue are the keys to avoiding the vague in writing. If you want an extra challenge, try the practice he has at the end of his article.
  • Andrew Pudewa examines motivation for the young writer. He finds that by developing Audience, first at home, then in community, and finally in the larger world, we can nurture a powerful enthusiasm that will be used to build a child's desire to write.
  • Cheri Blomquist gives insight into "Benjamin Franklin's Secret to Elegant Writing" and reveals that he saw imitation as a learning technique.

The Hedge of Thorns

You will never find a better book to read aloud to your children than this title by John Carrol. Filled with the essence of great storytelling that to our knowledge is based on true events, this story is memorable because it reminds us of how precarious our walk with the Lord is. It tells of a brother who pushes his sister through a hedge of thorns. We can only read further to see how this perilous situation turns the heart of a young boy rife with curiosity and how parents imbue him with grace. The word of God is beautifully echoed throughout until the final hedge that sets our path with briers by our heavenly Father "and gives us our bread even out of the thorns, until our proud minds are utterly subdued, and it is our will to follow the Lamb whitersoever He goeth."
