Principal's News
Dear Parents and Caregivers

Firstly, we must apologise for this newsletter being sent a day late. Yesterday the school lost internet connection.

We are really starting to ramp up the efforts to get ready for our annual Pet Day. Judges are ready to go, the food has been ordered and the community is being its usual fantastic self. The number of Jolly Jars and grocery items delivered to the school has trumped last year. The idea to wear a different hat or mufti and bring one of these items was a fantastic idea. So simple and yet the outcome is perfect.

Each class has also been making an item to sell. I have seen prototypes for fridge magnets and the trusty slime jars. This idea came about from feedback last year that there were not enough items to purchase on the day. I think the introduction of selling class items is great. It gives all our students a way to be a part of Pet Day even if you can not come on the day.

The Year 6 stalls are back in action for Pet Day. These are always a popular part of the celebrations. Our Year 6 students work hard to find new ideas to entertain the students before the auctions and raffle draws happen.

I really like watching the wooden stocks being used to capture a teacher or parent so sponges can be thrown at them. I am always so busy on the day that I have to rush past that stall. I catch a glimpse from the corner of my eye and hear the shrieks of laughter as the sponge connects.

This Friday we are asking for a second-hand book from your collection. These books will form the basis of our stall. Just bring the book to the classroom.  When you bring a second-hand book your child can wear whatever hat they like on the day. We are enforcing the wearing of hats, not scarves or bandana.

We have some forms for you to complete to offer assistance and to register your animals. We have left off soft toys and have focused on live animals.

Please use the links following so we will have a good idea of how many animals we are hosting on Pet Day and who can give some time on the day.

In Term 4 every student and teacher needs to wear a hat outside. This is such an important habit to develop. Please ensure your child has a navy blue hat to wear.

A few families have been asking when the Masterpiece Photography photos will be delivered to the school. We have to wait for them to be sent and generally give them out on the day they arrive. Masterpiece Photography is an outside provider so it is a bit of a waiting game. I can tell you it will be before the end of the school year.

We are hosting a full school assembly this week. This is a great time to celebrate and acknowledge our students. All parents are welcome to join us and we (the teachers and students) enjoy having you there.

All winter sports coaches are welcome to come to the assembly to share the season’s results with the community. Please contact Paul Morehu so he knows you are coming and we can give you a slot within the assembly.

Our school field is coping better than expected after the truck ripped up the grass. Anaru is working hard to give us some grass for Pet Day. If you see him out and about please compliment him on the new grass.

We are due for some rain this week and next. There is no cancelation day for Pet Day. We will be going ahead no matter what kind of weather it is.

Our Year 6 students have headed off to visit the Intermediate this morning. I am sure that they will return excited and wanting to head off to the next stage of their educational journey.

Mr Clark the Principal of the Intermediate will be in our school Staffroom from 5.30p.m. to answer any questions parents may have.

This issue Room 6 presents
And the Number of the Day is...

Having a selection of three different numbers on our board, the children in Room 6 can choose their level of ability to work out the number of the day.

Having a choice to work independently, with a buddy or in groups the children need to answer questions to show a variety of representations for the number including drawings, equations and appropriate strategies to solve the number problem.

Working with a buddy or in small groups creates a level of confidence that will encourage students to discuss their thinking, share their ideas and develop growth in the ways they think about numbers and operations.

Allowing students to share their representations and learn from each other is a vital component of Today’s Number and provides the teacher with a great deal of information about how students are thinking about numbers.
