ARCARe Update
Dear ARCARe supporters:

It's been a busy few weeks, and with the completion of the work on the house (and cleanup), and the ongoing gathering of furniture and clothing we're nearing the end of the preparation phase and are into the final bit before our family will arrive.

But we haven't chosen a family yet! We would like to have, but suddenly the lists of refugees stopped arriving as the IRCC (Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada) has been completely overwhelmed by both the number of people to process and the number of groups who want to sponsor them. The support from Canadians has been really inspiring and in many ways the government is trying to catch up with the will of the people.... their desire to help.

ARCARe is partnered with the federal government through one of its proxies, or SAHs (Sponsorship Agreement Holders): in our case, the United Church of Canada - through St. George and St. Andrew United Church, in Annapolis Royal. The refugees you've been hearing about who have arrived over the past few weeks are here because of private sponsoring groups, that is, groups that are able to raise the required amount to completely sponsor a family on their own for a year.

We are not able to do that, but are very happy to be able to split (50/50) the cost of sponsoring a family with the Government of Canada. ARCARe is part of the BVOR, or Blended Visa Office Referred sponsoring program, where we will pick a (likely) Syrian family from lists of already-approved people who have been screened by Canadian officials working in the camps in Turkey, Jordan, or Lebanon. There IS a chance that we will be sponsoring a family from one of the refugee camps in Africa, or elsewhere, but the focus of both the previous and present federal governments has been on bringing Syrian people to Canada. If a family is chosen that is other than Syrian, we will need to pay for the medical and travel expenses, but if a Syrian family is chosen these expenses will be covered by the Canadian government. For this reason we are gladly continuing to accept donations for our soon-to-arrive family.

We at ARCARe would like to thank so many individuals, churches, schools and other groups for their direct help, but also the greater community for being open to sponsoring a family in need like we are doing. We also would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Mawlid, and also a Healthy and Happy New Year!

Thank you, everyone.
Laurie McGowan, ARCARe Chair
