Core Updates
Facility Cores - The Comparative Pathology Core and Systems Technologies Core which provides genomic, metabolic, and proteomic analyses are open for service, consultation and collaboration with CHHE members. Dedicated bioinformatic support is also available.

Integrative Health Science Facility Core can help you translate your findings from animal/cell models to humans or vice versa.  This core can help you procure human tissues/specimans, help with conduct of human studies (questionnaire development, IRB assistance), use of the comparative toxicogenomic database (CTD, ctdbase.org) either with specialized training or data curation, assess to clinical populations at ECU, and much more.

Career Development Core to help early stage investigators and those new to environmental health sciences research to help develop stronger proposals.  There's also funding for early stage investigators to attend a scientific meeting or a grant writing workshop.

Community Outreach and Engagement Core (COEC) to help extend the reach of our research to communities in NC and beyond.

This Issue's Core Highlight

The Comparative Pathology Core (CPC) provides CHHE member scientists with access to veterinary pathology expertise to enhance development and evaluation of their animal model experiments.  Two CPC pathologists (Dr. Keith Linder and Dr. Heather Shive), and a third pathologist - a soon to arrive new hire, work with six CPC consulting pathologists to bring the best expertise to member studies.  Pathologists are available for consultation on experimental design, pathology methodology and tissue assessment methods. CPC consultation is most helpful during experimental design, development and/or grant writing phases.  CPC and member scientist interactions are sought that maximize environmental health science impacts and lead to collaborative grants and/or publications.
The cores are open and ready for use!  If you want to use one of the cores, please contact, Jackie Broughton Center Program Manager, and she'll put you in touch with the Core leader.  We need to keep track of core use, so for now, all requests will go through Jackie until we have a formal request tracking system up and running on the CHHE website.

Reminders
PINS: Remember when submitting your grants, be sure to select CHHE as a center in PINS

CHHEK Survey!  Please complete if you haven't already done so.

Please send us information on recent grants you have received (title, agency, amount) so we can include it in our next newsletter!

Teams
Research Teams are starting to meet to discuss topics they'd like to work on together and what types of events/enrichment activities they'd like CHHE to offer.
CHHE Website

CHHE website is being updated. Let us know what you'd like to find there and we'll try to make it happen.  We have a calendar of all environmental health sciences related seminars at NC State, so let us know about seminars happening in your area that we should include

Kudos

Dr. Mike Cowley Awarded the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award
CHHE would like to congratulate Dr. Cowley on this recent accolade, which was awarded for his project, “Epigenetic mechanisms linking the environment to metabolic health.” He was awarded $5,000 plus $5,000 in matching funds from NC State. The Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award is sponsored by Oak Ridge Associated Universities, of which NC State is a member. For more information, go to http://www.orau.org/university-partnerships/faculty-student-programs/powe/

NC State's environmental health science research and CHHE highlighted in the NIEHS Environmental Factor Newsletter June 2015

Kudos to the CHHE!  We received 26 proposals for our Pilot Project Awards!

**Please be sure to send us your "kudos" for our next newsletter**

Upcoming Events

NIEHS is hosting a number of workshops this summer on analysis of multiple exposures in epidemiology studies and on untargeted chemical analyses.  Links will be on the CHHE website

CHHE will host seminar speakers in the fall and spring.  Let us know of speakers you'd like to invite. We're hoping to have someone from NIEHS' grants office come and talk about the NIEHS grant portfolio
