Diversity in IT Matters

As we wrap up women's history month, I am proud to share how KINBER is working hard to promote diversity in IT fields and foster a more inclusive workforce for the future.

The Women in IT Networking at SC (WINS) team was honored to receive the CENIC 2017 Innovations in Networking Award for Experimental Applications  announced last week at the CENIC Annual Conference. WINS is a collaboration led by UCAR, KINBER, and ESnet that fosters gender diversity in the field of technology. By funding women IT professionals to participate in SCinet and to attend the annual Supercomputing Conference, the program allows the next generation of technology leaders to gain critical skills. There is still time to apply for this year's WINS program (deadline to apply is March 31st).

KINBER is coordinating with other national programs including the Internet2 Gender Diversity Initiative and local initiatives such as KINBER's Diversity Scholarship and even a new PA girls in STEM initiative to ensure that our future technology leadership is richly diverse and truly representative. If you are joining us at KINBERCON 2017 in Pittsburgh next week, be sure to attend the Promoting Diversity in IT session to add your voice to the discussion and learn more about how KINBER promotes inclusion and diversity in IT fields.

Community Spotlight: Lewisburg and Union County

As a part of Bucknell University's original node on KINBER's fiber path when building the PennREN network, Lewisburg has now become a hub of opportunity connecting community anchor institutions well beyond Bucknell University. In addition to the 10G connection at Bucknell, the Bucknell Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Union County Library System, and Susquehanna University are all connected to KINBER's statewide research and education network, PennREN.

The federated Union County Library System (UCLS), which serves the majority of Union County’s 39,587 residents, was created in 1998 when the Union County Commissioners enacted a county-wide tax to support it. The three independent members of the system include the Herr Memorial Library in Mifflinburg, the West End Library in Laurelton, and Lewisburg’s Public Library for Union County, which is designated as the system’s headquarters.

“We are honored to be among the first public libraries to be connected to KINBER,” said Roberta Greene, the director of Lewisburg’s library who also serves as the system administrator for the UCLS. Read more about how KINBER's network connectivity is enabling innovation and serving the community in Union County in the recent article in The Daily Item.
