Tackling Hairloss:
Insights by Dr.Polon

Have you noticed less fullness of your hair, excess shedding, a widening part, or has your hairline begun to creep higher and higher?

Hair thinning and loss is experienced by millions of men and women at some point in their life—sometimes it is simply considered acute loss (less than 6mo duration) but often it becomes chronic and progressive. The average human scalp has 110,000 hair follicles and it is normal to lose between 50-100 hairs per day. Excess shedding would be defined as losing more than 100-150 hairs per day. Hair loss can be a very stressful experience that comes with insecurities and unnecessary anxiety about your appearance.  The good news is that ReJuv is here to help. The first step is to recognize the problem early and get the appropriate medical/laboratory evaluation to rule out reversible causes.  If no reversible causes are found, it is best to start considering the host of treatment options we have to help halt and possibly reverse hair loss early in the course to have the best outcomes.

So, let’s start with the WHY...What causes hair loss and thinning?

  • Genetic–Androgenic Alopecia (male pattern baldness/female pattern baldness)  Men have the typical M shape receding hairline and this can start in their 20-30’s.  Females have general thinning that worsens in the crown area and presents more often around perimenopause in their 40-50’s.
  • Hormonal–Innate or supplemental Testosterone converts to DHT which is a strong enemy to the hair follicle in men and women. Women can have excess Testosterone & DHT when they have a condition called PCOS.  Loss of estrogen also contributes to hair loss.
  • Metabolic–Pregnancy, PCOS, Hypothyroid
  • Poor Scalp Health—Inflammation/Infection–Fungal rash, Psoriasis, Seborrhea
  • Medicationsthere are many that can be the culprit, common offending categories are: Blood thinners, Chemo agents, Blood pressure meds, Accutane, Oral Contraceptives, Seizure meds, Anti-depressant/anxiety meds
  • Poor Nutrition/Vitamin & Micronutrient deficienciesextreme weight loss, acute illness, leaky gut syndrome-which may be related to food sensitivities, Iron, Vitamin D, and Zinc deficiencies.
  • Over-processing with Color/Chemical treatments, excess chlorine exposure, use of products with sulfates/parabens.
  • Emotional/physical stress

Now on to TreatmentWant to Grow Hair? We can Help!  Improving Hair Loss is truly best accomplished via a combination treatment approach.  The goal is to try to stop the shedding and encourage regrowth by correcting underlying medical problems, removing offending agents, decreasing inflammation and improving scalp blood supply in order to help repair damaged root systems.  Effective treatment modalities will play a role in trying to get hair follicles back into the growth phase and increase the number, size and strength of the follicles.
Treatment Options:

  1. Rx Medications—Propecia (blocks DHT), Rogaine (vasodilator), Spironolactone(decreases production of Testosterone)
  2. Topical Hair Growth Serumsformulated with growth factors, peptides, cytokines, stem cells, and a host of other healing/stimulatory substancesSpecialty Shampoo & Conditioners are also available–discuss with the ReJuv Salon stylists.  Limit washing and color/chemical treatments.
  3. Low Level Laser Treatment (LLLT)—This type of treatment has been around for some time but the technology has been further improved with the debut of the Revian Red Cap that ReJuv promotes as an adjunctive therapy for home use.  The Revian Red Cap is the 1st FDA cleared dual wavelength LED (620 &660) device that is painless and promotes growth factors, increases blood supply, decreases inflammation and accelerates healing with just 10 minutes of daily use.  Ask us how to save $50 on yours!
  4. Nutritional improvement & Supplementation–one may benefit from a consultation to discuss diet modifications, food sensitivity testing and education surrounding appropriate vitamin and mineral supplementation as the choices are often endless and confusing.Common single supplements include: Saw Palmetto, Biotin, Vitamin D, and Zinc. Nutrafol, is a comprehensive/effective physician formulated product available at ReJuv that targets key root causes of hair loss and is clinically shown to increase hair growth and improve hair quality.  It includes the above supplements but also contains adaptogens to combat stress and another proprietary growth powering Synergen Complex all to help promote hair wellness from within!
  5. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)—A Natural Non-Surgical Approach offered at ReJuv

What is PRP?
PRP is a natural solution that we prepare from your own blood.  We concentrate a component of your blood called platelets, which are packed with helpful growth factors.  When injected into the scalp, PRP stimulates the hair follicles, increases blood flow to help hair grow, and ultimately thickens the hair shaft, “awakening” hair that that was previously on its way out.  All great news for anyone battling hair loss.  PRP has been used for over 20 years in numerous medical and dental applications.  It is safe, non-allergenic and naturally antibacterial.
Who is a candidate for PRP?
Men and women with almost all types of hair loss can benefit from PRP hair loss treatment, including the most common form of thinning (Androgenic Alopecia) which comes with age.  PRP is best when used early in the hair loss process, kicking hair back into gear.  It can be performed in conjunction with LLLT, topical therapies and oral supplementation.
What can I expect from a PRP treatment?
PRP is a straightforward in-office procedure.  A vial of blood is drawn then placed in a centrifuge to produce the correct concentration of product.  Your scalp is anesthetized using a topical numbing agent.  Next a microneedle procedure is done to the affected area of the scalp while we prepare the PRP.  Dr. Polon then strategically places small injections of the PRP into the scalp.  Afterward, an additional treatment serum may be applied.  You are encouraged to rest, avoid anti-inflammatory medications and avoid washing the scalp for 12 hours.  The most common side effect is a headache and fullness sensation.

How many treatments do you need?
Ideally, three treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is the best starting point, and we monitor progress at each session.  Although you can see improvement after a few months, results will continue to improve over 6 months from the 1st treatment.  After the initial series of three, intermittent maintenance treatments can be done every 6-12 months to help maintain the hair you have grown, with some individuals requiring less depending upon response.  Individual results vary.

Who should Not have PRP?
Patients with medical problems such as:  Thrombocytopenia, Platelet Dysfunction Syndromes, Hypofibrinogenemia, Excess Alcohol use, Acute and Chronic Infections, Chronic Liver Disease, Anti-Coagulation Therapy, Chronic Skin Diseases, Cancer, Uncontrolled Metabolic and Systemic Disorders.

In summary, if you are suffering from hair thinning or loss schedule a consultation to review your health history and determine what treatment might be right for you!

Mediterranean Tuna Salad
(Adapted from the Mediterranean Dish)

We love this take on tuna salad for a quick, high protein lunch that can be prepped ahead of time. Perfect to be served on a bed of lettuce, on a low carb wrap or with some whole grain crackers.

For the Dressing:

· 2 ½ tsp Dijon mustard

· 1 lime, juice and zest

· ⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil

· Pinch of salt and pepper

· ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes, optional

For the Tuna Salad:

· 3 cans tuna, 5 ounces each (use quality tuna of your choice)

· 2 celery stalks, chopped

· 1 English cucumber, chopped

· 4-5 whole small radishes, stems removed, chopped (optional)

· 3 green onions, both white and green parts, chopped (optional)

· ½ medium-sized red onion, finely chopped

· ½ cup cup pitted Kalamata olives, halved

· 1 bunch of parsley, stems removed, chopped (about 1 cup chopped fresh parsley)

· 10-15 fresh mint leaves, stems removed, finely chopped (about ½ cup chopped fresh mint)

· To make the mustard vinaigrette, in a small bowl, whisk together the Dijon mustard, lime zest, and lime juice. Add the olive oil, salt and pepper, and crushed pepper flakes (if using), and whisk again. Set aside.

· To make the tuna salad, in a large salad bowl, combine the tuna with the chopped vegetables, Kalamata olives, chopped fresh parsley and mint leaves. Mix gently.

· Pour the dressing over the tuna salad. Mix again to make sure the tuna salad is evenly coated with the dressing. Cover and refrigerate for half an hour before serving. When ready to serve, toss the salad gently to refresh. Enjoy!
