Do More 24 Is Approaching..!

What is Do More 24?
Do More 24 is a Statewide 24 hour day of giving designed to help nonprofits raise funds & engage new donors. 100s of Delaware nonprofits participate each year, making this one of the largest single days of giving of the year!

Who Hosts/Organizes Do More 24?
Do More 24 is hosted by the United Way of Delaware and Spur Impact.

Date & Time
March 3rd at 6pm and ends on March 4th at 6pm. Donations can be made any time from now, 1/28/2022, until March 4th. Any donation we receive from now, until March 4th at 6pm, will be matched!

Why Donate?
Life continues to remain difficult for many families in Delaware. As vaccines and boosters are rolled out, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, however, many of Delaware’s families are still struggling. Unemployment remains high and affordable housing remains scarce. The pandemic has exacerbated a crisis of affordable housing in Delaware. As a result, the cost to house families has risen quite substantially.  Families need us, they need you, and this is the perfect opportunity to help.

Tanya's Faithful Journey
Family Spotlight featuring Tanya

Tanya has always been a woman of morality, character, and determination. She was married, had two beautiful children, a stable home and job. To her neighbors and family, Tanya had a picturesque life, but beneath the surface, not everything in Tanya’s life was as perfect as it seemed. Tanya was the victim of domestic violence, and knowing the impact that it would have on her two children, it started to break her down as she struggled to escape.

She knew she had to make a change and prepared herself to make the hardest decision of her life, leaving her husband and world behind to start anew and create a better life for not only herself, but her children as well. On March 4th 2021, she took that leap of faith, packed up all her kid’s and her belongings, and travelled south to Delaware.

It wasn’t easy, but Tanya persevered and held her head up high, knowing she was on her way to create the life she had always imagined, with her kids safely by her side. Through her determination and strong will, she was soon connected with Family Promise, which she said “was one of the most important stepping stones I had the opportunity to receive while looking for guidance on my journey towards regaining my family’s normal life.”

When she met with her assigned Case Manager Kawanda, she immediately knew she was in great hands. Kawanda had genuine compassion, hospitality, and experience with the issue at hand, as Kawanda herself is a graduate of our program. Tanya worked closely with Kawanda who become like a sister to her and was her biggest supporter. Kawanda helped motivate and reassure Tanya that she was on the path to success and would soon be able to claim her independence in her new chapter of life.

At times when Tanya felt too overwhelmed, and that the unknowns she was facing was just a little too much, Kawanda would console her and act as family to her in her time of need. Going through the experience of homelessness can make someone feel at their most vulnerable, especially while trying to keep their family safe, so compassion and empathy is key. Tanya could finally rest easy and gain the confidence she needed, knowing Family Promise had her back and advocated for her all while providing her family with shelter, food, and resources to succeed.

Tanya secured housing in no time and soon started a crew member position at her local McDonalds. This job helped Tanya gain back her financial independence while striving for new professional goals and utilizing her personable people skills to brighten others days. We are excited to share that Tanya was recently promoted to Manager at her McDonalds store! Tanya is on her way to continued success personally and professionally, and we could not be prouder of her!

Volunteer Spotlight

Shelby and Daniel French from Limestone Presbyterian Church

This month we are highlighting Shelby & Daniel French!
The French's are proud members of Limestone Presbyterian Church and have been hands-on, consistent, strong supporters of our organization and have been volunteering for Family Promise for over 10 YEARS!

They first became involved with Family Promise while attending Good News Church in Hockessin, and when they transitioned to Limestone Presbyterian they were thrilled to continue serving others through our programs.

When asked what their favorite moments have been while volunteering, Shelby shares "Being able to spend time with families is a truly rewarding experience, whether it be playing games with children or conversing with parents over a leisurely cup of coffee. Though the pandemic has changed the face-to-face time there are still plenty of needs and ways to be involved, such as making meals. We are thankful that God lead us to this ministry. We encourage you to find a place to serve others, you will be more blessed than you can imagine."

Thanks to dedicated volunteers like the Frenchs, we are able to provide hands on and loving support directly to our families at our shelter.

Shelby & Daniel were nominated by their congregation coordinator Deb Bermingham. If you know someone who you would like to nominate to be 'spotlighted' please email Madeline@familypromisede.org to submit nominations.

Congratulations to Shelby & Daniel French, and thank you for all you do for Family Promise & Limestone Presbyterian!

Two Single Moms Overcome Homelessness

"There are more homeless families in the United States than in any other industrialized country. The main cause is the lack of affordable housing.

Nearly 172,000 families experienced homelessness in 2020, making up about 30% of the homeless population.

Many of those families comprise single women with young children who have no choice but to seek family homelessness services: emergency shelters, transitional housing or permanent housing placements.

Some women remain stuck in the system. Others overcome adversity and become advocates in their community. Every woman who has battled homelessness has a different story to tell. Each with their own unique experience.

These are some of their stories.."
