A Season with Chaplin: THE GOLD RUSH, CITY LIGHTS, SHORT FILMS and more! (April and May, 2016)
Charles Chaplin - CITY LIGHTS
What is this thing that comes in spring
that gives us all the itch?

Charles Chaplin
A KING IN NEW YORK (1957)

A Season with Chaplin

In Chaplinesque terms, THE GOLD RUSH (1925) is to CITY LIGHTS (1931) what winter is to spring. From the frozen landscapes of the first to the flower seller of the second, Chaplin operates the change of season in our concert agenda. From Norway to Austria, from Germany to China, the months of April, May and early June provide a good number of opportunities to enjoy Chaplin films in concert.

THE GOLD RUSH
A Season With Chaplin
Grown up among limelights and music-hall artists, Chaplin would not restrain himself from composing music for his own films. "Music", he said, "entered my soul". In THE GOLD RUSH, for instance, Chaplin wisely interweaves his own melodies with quotations of Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky. This film reaches this spring the concert halls of Münster (Germany), Hong Kong (China) and Vienna (Austria).

CITY LIGHTS, with its fast-paced fanfares and an unforgettable love theme ("La violetera") borrowed from Spanish composer José Padilla, will be performed in Stavanger (Norway), Coesfeld and Wolfsburg (Germany). A selection of earlier CHAPLIN SHORTS will be presented in Osnabrück (Germany), this time with music composed by Carl Davis.

Chaplin dominates this FilmPhilharmonic season, but we also invite you to check our calendar and learn more about other exciting film concerts taking place this spring. Among them, two F. W. Murnau classics presented with recent compositions: FAUST (1926) -music by Bernd Schultheis- and NOSFERATU (1921) -music by Bernd Wilden. And, at the end of April, THE MATRIX LIVE in Lyon (France), with Frank Strobel conducting Don Davis' electrifying score.
