Hello friend,
You will notice that your quarterly newsletter from 4 Paws has a new name and a new format to make it easier for you to read the latest news from us on your laptop or mobile device. I hope you like the imbedded links that will enable you to go to our website or Facebook page with just a click. There are links at the top and bottom of the newsletter that you can click to forward the newsletter to a friend. We have also provided a link at the bottom of the newsletter where you can unsubscribe should you decide you no longer wish to receive our newsletter, although we’d hate to see you go. As we are still experimenting with the new format, it would be great to get your feedback, click here.

On a very sad note, the 4 Paws community wishes to express its deepest sympathy to President Julie Penlington, and her family, following the death of her husband Paul. Paul died on August 5 after a long illness. He will be sadly missed by us all.

Thank you for your support. I hope you enjoy this issue.

Meet a 4 Paws Corporate Sponsor

Each issue, 4 Paws Tales will shine a spotlight on some of the wonderful people who enable 4 Paws to do its important work.

This issue, we interview Permanent Resident sponsors Katie and Ron Hicks from Keyline Realty.

4 Paws Permanent Residents are elderly pets that have come to us, or animals abandoned or surrendered with serious health issues. These dogs and cats will remain in the care of 4 Paws, in the loving homes of experienced Foster Carers, until the end of their days. In order to meet the ongoing veterinary costs to care for these special pets, 4 Paws asks businesses, social clubs, sports groups, schools and pet-loving individuals to sponsor a Permanent Resident.
Sponsors Katie and Ron Hicks with their dogs Missie and Gidgee.
Permanent Resident Sponsors: Ron and Katie Hicks, Keyline Realty.
Sponsored pets:
Sophie, 10 years, Australian Terrier Cross.
Lizzie, 9 years, Maltese Terrier.
Mac, 8 years, Chinese Crested Cross.

4PT(4 Paws Tales): What inspired you to become a 4 Paws corporate sponsor?

Katie & Ron: Our love of animals and wanting to help dogs that have been neglected or abused in the past.

4PT: You currently sponsor three dogs, have you sponsored other pets in the past?

Katie & Ron: Yes, we sponsored Joseph until he passed away earlier this year.

4PT: What is involved in sponsoring a Permanent Resident?

Katie & Ron: The cost of their care is automatically deducted from our bank account each month and sometimes we visit them at their Carer’s home.

4PT: What does sponsoring elderly or special needs pets bring to your life and business? What do you like best about it?

Katie & Ron: We like to be able to be of help to Four Paws, which is such a wonderful organisation.

4PT: Do you have pets of your own?

Katie & Ron: Yes, a Border Collie and a toy Poodle.

4PT: What would you say to an individual, business or group of workmates considering sponsoring a Permanent Resident?

Katie & Ron: We would tell them to go for it! Although it is not hands-on help, it is a way of helping animals and Four Paws.

Sponsor me!

Stubby: elderly male, Foxy Cross, 6kg
When Stubby was surrendered, he immediately showed a friendly and loving nature towards everyone around him. Stubby has only ever known love and doesn't appear to be shy around adults or children.
He is still very spritely for his age and loves to play.
He has been waiting so long for a family to adopt him and now, as he reaches his retirement years, we have decided he will remain as a 4 Paws Permanent Resident. This way we can ensure he is kept in the manner to which he has become accustomed!
Stubby's required monthly sponsorship is $50.
Contact us if you'd like to sponsor him.

President's note

4 Paws celebrated its 10th anniversary in May and it has been a time for us to remember the many wonderful animals that have come into our care. Since 2005, we have found homes for thousands of cats and dogs. A decade ago, the refuge could not take all the animals from the Pound and many pets were being destroyed. 4 Paws came into being to fill that gap.

As well as dogs and cats currently in foster care awaiting adoption, 4 Paws also has more than 50 pets with special needs in permanent foster homes. These gorgeous animals will live out the rest of their lives receiving the special care they deserve in loving homes. 4 Paws will see that they receive the best veterinary care.

We've been very pleased with the number of cat adoptions recently - 12 cats have being adopted in the past two months. These have included mother cat Rosie and her three female kittens, Princess (who has been with us for a couple of years) and Levi & Leo (these two boys struck up a friendship at Halfway House and went to a new home together).

Sadly, there has been a recent influx of pets being surrendered into our care by their elderly owners who are going into nursing homes and other accommodation where they cannot take their companion animals. This is a very distressing situation for all concerned.

We remain grateful for the small, committed band of foster carers and other volunteers who keep 4 Paws going and for the generosity of our supporters and sponsors in the Sunshine Coast community who allow us to continue our work.

- Julie Penlington

Pets available for adoption

Tina and TJ: Maltese x Shih tzu, 8 years, female and male
Tina (L), 4kg; TJ  (R), 6.5kg.
This brother and sister adore each other and must be re-homed together.
These lovely dogs are toilet trained, love their walks, are sociable with other dogs, and travel well in the car.
TJ is great with tricks - he knows how to high five and how to roll over and play dead. Tina knows how to sit and lie down. They are a very lovable and affectionate pair.
An inside home where they are part of the family is essential.
If you already have a dog and wish to adopt TJ and Tina, you must obtain a permit to keep more dogs if required by your Council.
Adoption fee: $595 for the pair.

Earl: 5 years, male
Earl is a sensitive soul. This beautiful cat with an adorable nature prefers a quiet home. Earl has lived with other cats before. He requires a special diet and daily medication.
Can you give Earl a home? He has been waiting patiently for a long time at Halfway House for a family of his own.
Adoption fee: $140

Wilma: 5 years, female
Sweet Wilma is the perfect lap cat and she has been waiting patiently for a forever home.
Affectionate and kind, she is a wonderful companion. She loves to smooch and would be very happy living with another calm cat and a single owner in a quiet home.
Adoption fee: $140
