FVRx Program Coming to SCNY

This summer, the Food & Health Network is launching a pilot Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program (FVRx) in Broome County. Through Innovation Funds awarded by Care Compass Network, this new program allows clinicians at participating sites to write prescriptions for fruits and vegetables that can be spent at certain local food retail sites. The prescriptions are accompanied by nutrition counseling, cooking classes, chronic disease self-management classes, and other community supports.

Research shows that food insecurity is a robust predictor of healthcare utilization and higher expenses. These higher expenses leave patients with fewer resources to purchase food and reduce their ability to manage chronic conditions, resulting in negative health outcomes.

The South Central NY FVRx program is a strategy to address these serious issues through nutrition-based preventative health care, based on a nationally recognized, evidence based program pioneered by Wholesome Wave, a national nonprofit and partner on this project.

Stay tuned for more information!

Farm to School News

Tioga School District is currently undertaking an exciting project to create the Tiger Farm School Garden! Their vision is the creation of a living learning lab where students can apply classroom lessons and learn where food comes from. They are currently in the process of planting 700 pounds of seed potatoes, and will also be looking to plant corn in the fall. If you are interested in getting involved contact Nancy Eckstrom at neckstro@tiogacentral.org. Check out their Facebook page by clicking here.

Food Policy Alert

From the Food Bank of the Southern Tier: On Tuesday, May 23, President Trump released his budget proposal that contains many extreme cuts that would drastically increase food insecurity in the Southern Tier, including:
  • $193 billion from SNAP
  • $32 million from TEFAP
  • $40 billion from Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit
The budget also proposes to eliminate the following programs: WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program, School Meal Equipment Grants, LIHEAP, CDBG, CSBG, Emergency Food and Shelter Program, and the AmeriCorps program.

Please call your Senators and your Congressperson today!

Dial Feeding America’s toll free number, (888) 398-8702, listen to the pre-recorded message and enter your zip code when prompted. Once you are connected to your first Member of Congress, state that you are a constituent, and give your name and the town you are calling from. Let them know you are calling about the budget and deliver this important message:

“As your constituent and supporter of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, I am calling you today to tell you that I am opposed to the harmful cuts proposed in the President's budget. Rather than shredding the social safety net, we should be strengthening it so that everyone in our society has the opportunity to thrive. The President's budget would cut $193 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program over 10 years, among other crucial safety net programs. Please find a more responsible way to balance the budget.”
