October is Farm to School Month! The National Farm to School Network calls it, "a time to lift up the connections happening all over the country between students and local food. Whether you’re an educator, farmer, food producer, parent, student, food enthusiast or advocate, everyone can celebrate and take action this month." Join us and learn ways you can get involved here!

AmeriCorps Opportunities with the Rural Health Network! The Farm to School Corps is part of our collaborative Farm to School work in collaboration with Broome-Tioga BOCES and Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES and 26 school districts. Farm to School Corps members will work as part of an expanding regional team to develop, implement, grow, and evaluate programs to bring healthy, local food to students. Members will work with staff, students, parents, farms, and community partners to increase capacity for hands-on learning, local procurement, and creating a school-wide culture of health.

On September 20th, FaHN collaborated with Rock on Cafe to host a roasted cinnamon and brown sugar sweet potato test test at the Deposit Elementary School. Pictured above left: FaHN Farm to School Coordinator, Jessica Barbini encourages students to give feedback on the recipe by voting on a dot chart. Pictured above right: Students from the Deposit High School Foods Class helped prepare the sweet potato recipe and educate the elementary students about farm to school.
Tioga Harvest Celebration at Tiger Farms: On Thursday, September 27th, students in grades Pre-K through 6th grade celebrated the harvest season at Tioga Central Schools. The kitchen staff grilled a delicious NY Thursday-themed lunch with corn on the cob and fresh apples from Russell's Farms, oven-roasted potatoes, and a grilled Lupo's Chicken Spiedie!

From pollinators to baby goats and a mock farm stand with local corn, students enjoyed many stations hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension, local farms, the Natural Resource Conservation Service, Katies' Krops, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, and the Food and Health Network. The Food and Health Network led a tour through the garden with the little ones, where they were prompted to identify different vegetables, flowers, and insects. In addition, students were able to choose between painting a mural and Garden Yoga, an activity that was developed for students to connect with an assortment of vegetables while moving their bodies.

A special thanks to Community Volunteer Nancy Eckstrom, Tioga Central School Food Service staff, the Rock on Cafe, and the Tiger Farms Steering Committee for coordinating another lovely Harvest Celebration!
From the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition: On Monday, October 1, the thing that family farmers, sustainable agriculture supporters, and farmer advocates across the country have been working over a year to prevent happened: the 2014 Farm Bill expired. It’s not the first time that Congress has failed to pass a bill on time, but ag-advocates – including the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) – had worked especially hard to prevent the delay of the 2018 bill and the resulting shut down of dozens of agriculture, food, research, and conservation programs to new applications and contracts. Last month, the League of Women Voters of Broome and Tioga Counties hosted FaHN Director Erin Summerlee and partners from Broome Tioga BOCES, Lourdes Hospital, and VINES for a presentation and discussion on Farm to School, the Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program, and food policy. Thank you to the League and attendees!
