Most organisations don’t often talk about their board, the people behind the scenes doing all the hard work of thinking, planning and managing organisations to achieve. At FLN, we know the value of a committed and engaged board. Our board members are an incredible, talented and inspirational group.
We would like to acknowledge the hard-work and staying power of board stalwarts such as Claire Woods who has led the organisation for well over a decade as Chair and who has handed the mantle of Chairperson over to another of our very experienced operators in Mark Madden. We’d also like to extend a very warm welcome to three of our newest board members, Cameron Smith, Angela Barca and Bill Bowman. Cameron has a wealth of skills and experience in the field of fund-raising and Bill and Angela will bring their financial expertise to the opportunities and challenges of growing our work and impact in the local area. We’re excited to have them on board.
New Look website – we hope you like it!
We are pleased to announce the launch of our new and refreshed website!

We hope that you find this fresh look easy to use and informative. We will strive to keep it accessible for reading, searching and sharing. Your feedback is always welcome.
Jewellery making success for FLN Students
After a 10 week Jewellery making course, refugee and asylum seeker students of Fitzroy Learning Network exhibited the results of their hard work at Atelier Jewellers in Smith Street on 4 August.
The Mojawharat exhibition attracted a huge crowd and nearly every item of jewellery was sold in under 2 hours. And the great thing about this is that every cent of the sale price went directly to the students. Over $900 was raised for the students on the night. Kudos to course tutors Claire Taylor and Nikki Jones, the students and of course to our sponsors, Realestate.com, Koodaks Jewellery Supplies, John Lazos and Associates and AGS Metals. We think all these guys deserve a great big Facebook 'Like'.
English 4 All
FLN runs a weekly English for All program for people seeking asylum at our Napier Street building. This program is designed to provide opportunities for anyone seeking asylum wanting to develop their English language and work-ready skills. Focusing on speaking, writing, reading and grammar. New students welcome at any time, and it is free. To enrol contact Maria on 9417 2897 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Classes Monday, Tues, wed 9.15-12.15.
Amazing crowd-funding result!
At end of July we completed a campaign on Chuffed.org to raise funds for investing in the talents of local young people. We wanted to buy musical instruments so that the passion these young people have for music making could be supported and nurtured. We hoped to raise $6,000. But we did not bank on the generosity of our supporters and in the end we raised $11,000. Just under $3,000 came from the Chuffed campaign, which was then topped-up by Inner North Community Foundation who wanted to make sure we achieved our $6,000 target. We were obviously over the moon, but then, along came a hero in the form of an anonymous individual donor who gave us a single and extremely generous donation of $5,000 to add to the total.
We now have enough money to purchase our instruments and associated equipment. Fitzroy Learning Network wishes to thank everybody who championed our cause and, of course, all who donated to the campaign. Any surplus funds will be directed to similar projects with young people
Business Leadership course in big demand!
A couple of weeks ago we opened bookings for our business leadership course for women from multicultural backgrounds. The course involves participants exploring how to create a viable food business including developing language skills for business and training in food handling and health and safety. The response has been fantastic and we have increased the number of places from 12 to 14 and still have people on a waiting list. If you, or someone you know, has missed out, don’t worry. Business Leadership 2 will be running from October through to December.
Those interested in cooking and catering and who want to know how to set-up a food business, this is the course you've been looking for. Please promote and share. To book into the second course Contact Maria on 9417 2897 or by email at email@example.com.
This course is delivered in partnership ACFE with Cultivating Communities and Melbourne Markets. Visit our website to download a full program of 2016 courses.
Class English 1B farewells their much loved teacher, Nicole Adernetto
On Monday 22nd of August at 12.30pm, the 1B English class had a surprise party for Nicole [centre], because she is leaving Fitzroy Learning Network to have a baby [don’t worry guys, she will be coming back!].
18 students and Barbara, the FLN volunteer organised the food, drink and presents for the party. We had lots of food including 2 cakes, spring rolls, fruit, jelly, dips and prawn crackers and we drank orange juice.
We gave Nicole some lovely presents including some baby clothes, blankets, a baby bottle, a towel and 2 bunches of flowers! Nicole had so many presents she had to call her husband Troy to come and pick her up!
We are all very happy for Nicole, but sad to see her go.
FLN is seeking volunteers
We are looking for volunteers to support our English for All program for people seeking asylum as well as for the Business Leadership Course. These are tremendously rewarding roles helping people overcome barriers for English language learning. Experience as a teacher of English as an additional language would be a great asset, but also suits a recent graduate of LOTE and TESOL.
If you are interested in this or any other volunteer role at FLN, please contact Amandine on 9417 2897 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org
Friday Night Get-togethers

In the spirit of appreciating all the various contributions that make FLN a special organisation, we send out an open invitation to each and every one of you to join us on the last Friday of every month from 5:30pm onwards.
So if you hanker for a drink, light refreshments and great company, our next event is on Friday 26th August. Put it in your diary now, or keep an eye on our Facebook page for a reminder.
