Inspired by the tremendous pool of talent that exists in our area, we are making important progress in developing a free music program for the young people of Fitzroy and the surrounding area. FLN will work with some of the local musical talent within our community to teach young people the fundamentals of collaborative music making; teach young people to play musical instruments (drums, guitar and keyboard); teach DJ’ing skills; and develop their talents and interest in hip-hop and rap. This program will be a significant benefit to young people looking for new ways to express themselves, and for those who would love to learn an instrument but are unable to access private tuition.
FLN already has a great track record of supporting the musical talents of local young people who have a tremendous portfolio of songs up-loaded on soundcloud. Three of our regular FLN young people recently won an international award for their music video ‘Wild Beast’ - Rieth, Steven and Maluath from our Clubhouse were presented with the Judges Award Global RE@CH Media Festival, an international showcase of work created by members from 100 different Clubhouses across the world.
We have had a great response from local musical mentors but we are looking for more skilled tutors who can commit a term at a time (each term is about 10 weeks long). So if you or anybody else you know is interested, contact Alex at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Music for Youth Crowd-funding Campaign Up-date! Some two and a half weeks ago we launched a crowd-funding campaign to raise funds for musical instruments for our youth programs. We have been blown away by the support we have received so far. Our campaign, on chuffed.org, has been shared 191 times with 25 donors contributing $2,065 towards our target of $6,000.
We need a little more help to go all the way!
Recently, we received a tremendous boost to the campaign with the Inner North Community Foundation pledging to match us dollar for dollar as we strive to achieve our goal (up to a total donation of $3,000). This means that if we raise $3,000 they will match that with $3,000 of their own – this will see us achieving our target.We have less than $1,000 more to go to make this happen. There is less than 2 weeks of the campaign left and we need your help:
If you haven’t donated already, please visit chuffed.org and donate now. It really doesn’t matter how little you donate as long as you donate. If everyone gives a little we will have no problem in reaching our target;
Share our campaign with as many others as you possibly can. Use email and social media to ensure your friends, family and colleagues also have the opportunity to donate. And please ask them to share the campaign with their own networks;
Finally, visit and like our Facebook page to keep up-to-date with our progress

Great new partnership with the Renegade Pub Football League
On Saturday June 11, FLN was invited by the Renegade Pub Football League (RPFL) to fund-raise at its round 2 games. Remarkably, in just under 4 hours of running the BBQ and rattling our FLN collection buckets, we raised $1,759. We also gave out a bundle of information about FLN and had some really good conversations with the incredibly warm, welcoming and supportive crowd. We were also lucky to have the Yarra City Mayor, Cr. Roberto Colanzi and Langridge Ward councilor, Cr. Geoff Barbour, turn up to help with the tin rattling. Great effort by these guys.
The RPFL committee of management and their supporters were fantastic and we congratulate them for their community-focus and civic mindedness. A great outfit, get behind them if you can.
AMES Tutor Training Each term, in partnership with AMES, FLN offers the possibility for new tutor volunteers to undertake comprehensive training to develop the skills they will need in their role.
The tutor training course develops the learning required by volunteers to be effective in their roles as tutors to adult migrants, refugees or asylum seekers. Along with gaining ESL tutoring and cross-cultural communication skills, they are given access to a large bank of resources specifically developed for use by adults learning English as an additional language.
Last term, fifteen people attended the five week training course held at FLN. The feedback was very positive and one participant gave us his impression:
"Completing the AMES course at the Fitzroy Learning Network has been a great experience. I have learned many different things in education such as the different types of learning methods: visual, auditory, kinesthetic and analytical. I also now know how to gauge a student in order to establish an effective lesson plan that caters to their needs."
To become a tutor at FLN and to enroll in the AMES Tutor Training course, please contact Amandine at email@example.com
FLN Working Bee- NAB Volunteers
In early July we had our regular visit from a group of NAB volunteers who came to FLN for another much needed working bee. Support of this kind is very important for us as it releases key staff to focus on getting ready for the term ahead, and ensures our premises are as welcoming as possible for the learning weeks to come.
We are very appreciative of the support given to us by our corporate partner, the National Australia Bank.

In the spirit of appreciating all the various contributions that make FLN a special organisation, we send out an open invitation to each and every one of you to join us on the last Friday of every month from 5:30pm onwards.
So if you hanker for a drink, light refreshments and great company, our next event is on Friday 29th July. Put it in your diary now, or keep an eye on our Facebook page for a reminder.
