FDA reviewers: Moderna’s COVID vaccine for children is safe

The FDA’s expert panel voted unanimously that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine is safe for children ages 6 to 17 years old. The same panel will meet today to consider vaccines from both Pfizer and Moderna for children ages 5 and younger.

Moderna vaccine may carry higher risk of heart inflammation in young men

According to data presented to the FDA, Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine may carry a higher risk of heart inflammation than the Pfizer vaccine in young men. The incidence of myocarditis is relatively rare and the vast majority who suffer the side effect fully recover. The data was considered before the FDA’s decision on recommending Moderna’s vaccine to children ages 6 – 17.

HHS clarifies its guidance on audio-only telehealth after the PHE

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services clarified its guidance for audio-only telemedicine under HIPAA. Covered health care providers can provide audio-only telehealth services when the communication is consistent with HIPAA requirements. The new guidance will apply after the expiration of the public health emergency. During the PHE, HHS’s Office of Civil Rights has not been imposing penalties on covered health care providers for noncompliance with HIPAA rules when conducting telehealth visits.
