I think everyone is catching some spring fever – and I know I can’t be the only one who loves this boost of Vitamin D.
We all need more sunshine in our lives. The ‘Collective Impact’ work of Milwaukee Succeeds is not an easy or quick fix, and I know that for the majority of you, this effort is outside of your “real” job. Bringing people together, in a structured way, to achieve social change is no walk in the park, even on a warm spring day.
So, my rays of hope for you today are highlights from a great event at Clarke Street School last week.
As most of you know, we are partnering with MPS and other Milwaukee schools to implement our Transformative Reading Instruction (TRI), demonstrating that we can and will significantly improve the ability of our children to learn to read and to read to learn. Clarke Street is reporting large gains in foundational reading.
On Dr. Seuss’s birthday (March 2), Clarke Street hosted a “Read Across America” day, inviting community leaders to celebrate reading and watch Milwaukee Succeeds Goal 2 – School Readiness (specifically 3rd grade reading) in action. To the left, Clarke Street Principal Daryl Burns is dressed as the Cat in the Hat!
TRI focuses on Reading Foundations which provides a systematic way for children to learn to read and advance their reading skills. When children get the right balance of targeted instruction and practice, reading becomes natural. Watch this 3-minute video to see TRI in action!https://youtu.be/bLuHBNjx-H0
TRI is an all-encompassing model. TRI creates readers by providing intensive evidence-based coaching to K-2 teachers on foundational reading and social emotional skills; this coaching is then aligned with tutoring, parent engagement activities, and experiential learning opportunities. When TRI is in place, children feel successful, enjoy reading, and are happy learners. The coaching model used in TRI is the cornerstone for our success. Teachers benefit from professional development coupled with follow-up coaching that is interactive, supportive, and encouraging in order to improve the quality of their instruction and to create an active learning environment.
Enjoy the warm weather, and let me know if this video and radio story warmed your heart!
See you soon,
