March 2, 2016

Hi Friends,

I’m so proud of our progress so far in 2016. We’ve had “crucial conversations” with our Leadership Council and Operations Team on how we are on track to achieving our 2020 goals.  Part of those conversations asked the important question, “Who is missing from our table?”  As I reflect on where we are and where we are going, I want to invite those folks who may have stepped away from our goals, networks and teams to re-engage with Milwaukee Succeeds.  When partners ask how I think we are doing, my favorite response is: “We are kicking it... and making a difference for all our babies in Milwaukee." Come back and “kick it” with us! Your voice will be heard and your passion for our children will be more than matched.

One of our voices is from Dr. Vicki J. Martin, President of Milwaukee Area Technical College.  As you know, Milwaukee Succeeds Goal 3 is Career Readiness – “all young people utilize post-secondary education or training to prepare for a career.” In this week’s message, Dr. Martin shares an important deadline on how we can expand our college readiness network.

Take it away Vicki!

Thank you, Danae.

On September 9, 2015, Milwaukee Area Technical College introduced the MATC Promise, a new initiative that will provide free college tuition for eligible 2016 high school graduates.

The response to our announcement from area high school seniors and their families was overwhelming! Our initial goal was 1,000 students for the first cohort. We were thrilled that 2,969 students applied for the MATC Promise!

But now we are nearing a critical deadline and need your help. All Promise applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by Tuesday, March 15. A completed FAFSA determines a student’s financial need and eligibility for the MATC Promise. Without a completed FAFSA and meeting the other eligibility criteria, applicants will not be able to benefit from our offer of free college tuition. To date, the number of completed financial aid applications is woefully low.

Please help us spread the word about this deadline. If you know a family who applied for the MATC Promise, please remind them of the upcoming March 15 deadline. We realize that we are faced with an “all hands on deck” situation and need everyone in our community to help get the word out about the importance of completing the FAFSA. Detailed information about our financial aid workshops is available at matc.edu/promise.

We know the financial aid application can be a laborious, complicated process. In fact, data shows that completing the FAFSA is one of the most frequent barriers to young people pursuing post-secondary education.

To assist local families, we have scheduled a number of workshops at which our staff will walk them through the financial aid process. A common misperception about the FAFSA is that families need to have their 2015 tax forms completed … they do not! Families can estimate earnings based on their 2014 tax documentation.

I firmly believe the MATC Promise will make a meaningful difference for young people and our entire community. I hope I can count on your support to reach out to families and share this important message.

Thank you,

Dr. Vicki J. Martin, MATC President
