Dr. Darienne Driver, Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools, and I participated in a wonderful education session at Bader Philanthropies, one of our five prominent funders who have joined together to commit $5 million over the next four years to help sustain and accelerate Milwaukee Succeeds. The luncheon included Bader philanthropies Board of Directors and many other community partners involved in the education landscape in Milwaukee.
It was a great opportunity to share how MPS is partnering with Milwaukee Succeeds to improve reading proficiency and literacy for our children by providing intensive evidence-based coaching to K-3 teachers on foundational reading and social emotional skills. This coaching is then aligned with tutoring, parent engagement workshops, and experiential learning opportunities.
As Dr. Driver passionately said “Our Time is Now” to demonstrate that education matters and is the gateway to opportunity and success for our young people. We shared that our experience in partnering to implement our Transformative Reading Initiative, demonstrates that we can and will significantly improve the ability of our children to learn to read and to read to learn.
Here are pictures from the event, including our friend Dan Bader, Director and President/CEO of Bader Philanthropies:
Here is a summary of the event from Bader Philanthropies:
Over 60 nonprofit, government, philanthropic and civic leaders heard Dr. Driver and Ms. Davis’ reflections on the extraordinary progress that has been made in our community. The strategic and coordinated efforts over the last few years at the grassroots level through Milwaukee Succeeds and in the classroom with local districts such as the Milwaukee Public Schools are opening opportunities for young people to learn the critical 21st century skills they will need as they pursue post-secondary educational opportunities, prepare to join our city’s workforce and become citizens in our community.
Through our issue-based convenings, Bader Philanthropies connects organizations and people with one another to inspire thoughtful dialogue and transformation.
By the way, Dr. Driver and Dan Bader were named two of the most influential people in Milwaukee by Milwaukee Magazine last week. Congratulations to you both!
See you soon,
