Genesis 6:1-8

When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose.

***Interjection****  This is a peculiar verse.  Theologists seems to think that sons of God were a species of giants.  Benson's commentary as giants:  "There were giants — Men so called partly for their high stature, but principally for their great strength and force, whereby they oppressed and tyrannized over others. For this is mentioned as another sin and cause of the flood." (  With this line of thinking, they were probably from the line of Cain, a sinful generation.
Another conclusion of theologians is that the sons of God were demons.  God created all things, so we may conclude that the fallen angels were having sexual relations with the women.  This is likely in that the devil wanted to pollute the bloodline, as Christ was already declared to crush Satan.
Regardless of the details on this particular species, the Lord was angry, which brings us to the next verse.

Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide ina man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.”

***Interjection*** We can see today that men do not live to be 800 or 900 like we saw in the last lesson.  Thank you Pastor Kenneth for this revelation awhile back.  This is a portion of the judgement that God brings on mankind in the future.  Life span for mankind significantly decreases after the flood, and continues to decrease through Mose's time.  Psalm 90:10 even says that 70 or 80 years is a long life.  And so, we see that a long fulfilled life coming to Christ can be obtained in an average life span of 70-120 years at it's best.  If you google the oldest woman, you will get a little over 122 years.  My thought is that 120 years is like saying 70 years still containing a 78 year old.  Or the Lord is prophesying a general roundabout number.

4The Nephilimb were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

^^^ Reiterating Genesis 6:1 - Nephilim are the offspring of the sons of God and daughters of men.

5The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7So the LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.”

***Interjection*** All of mans thoughts were consistently evil is a bold statement as to the state of man at this time.  Sin was so ramped that the Lord regretted making man and He grieved in His heart.  We see the tenderness of a father to a child's rebellion. God was sorry He made man and His heart was saddened by the choices of mankind.  However, God is holy and just, therefore judgment must come.  He would wipe out every living creature on earth.

8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

And then there was grace.

What places the favor of God on you?

Noah believed God.

Genesis 6:9 Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.

Believe God.  Walk with God.  Talk with God.
Next week: We will study Noah and God's plan for Noah to build the ark.  We will study the covenant that God made with Noah.
My pastor at Commissioned Church will be my accountability.
