Yes, you can still volunteer with us!!

But it will be a bit different this year! We're asking volunteers to do a Safety Orientation Training before they come in to volunteer.
There are three scheduled right now, with more to come. Sign up at
You can choose:
September 9th from 4pm to 5pm
September 14th from 2 pm to 3 pm
September 22nd from 2 pm to 3 pm
Or wait for more times to come out!

Also, all volunteer shifts will need to be signed up for in advance through our website. We will only have 2 volunteers in the kitchen at a time, and we will ask that you try and come in for most of your shift (leaving 15 minutes early for a class or something is okay).

Sign up for a Safety Orientation!

More volunteer opportunities

The Halifax Brewery Market is looking for volunteers to help at the market on Saturdays. Check out the opportunity here -

Help make buttons/pins for the Loaded Ladle! If you're interested, e-mail Sage at and tell her what times you're available. She can show you how!

Be in a volunteer orientation video! If you would be interested in being a model in some footage for an orientation video, please e-mail Sage at and let her know your availability between Sept 14th and Sept 25th.

Know anything about electronic file management/the cloud/shared drives? We're re-organizing our Google Drive to be workable for all our personnel but we're not experts. We would love to get a hand from an information science type person!

I know what you did last summer...

This past summer, we ran a food box program delivering free food boxes to students who signed up through a link on our social media.  We delivered many hundreds of boxes from April through July. We couldn't have done it without the help of delivery volunteers and our funding partners, Meal Exchange, Alpha Gamma Foundation, and Dalhousie HR/Growing Communities.

Our New Covid-19 Protocols

We want to keep folks safe AND fed, so we're doing some things differently this year. Here's what's changed:

  • Max capacity of four people in the kitchen at any time
  • Everyone in the kitchen wearing a mask at all times
  • Safety training for every volunteer
  • Covid-19 screening e-mail for every volunteer before each shift
  • No more line-up - we'll be serving food from our refrigerator for a longer period of time (probably something like 11:30 - 3:00 pm - this isn't set in stone yet so stay posted!)
  • No more plates or tupperwares - we're switching to take-out containers. We looked into compostable, but apparently Halifax doesn't have the facilities yet to handle them, so we've chosen reusable plastic containers for the time being.
  • Frequent sanitizing (to be honest this hasn't changed, we always had good sanitization going on - but we'll be even more diligent now).
  • Plexiglass barrier between the kitchen and the outside
  • Got questions about safety? Feel free to ask us at
