Connecting the Global Underground - Discussion and Album Release Party
On Friday 13th of October at 3pm we will host a discussion regarding an exciting new research project, supported by Pro Helvetia Johannesburg and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
The research focuses on connecting East African musicians with the ‘global underground’ - the loose network of record labels, events, DJs, publications and platforms that support and develop non-commercial music. Discussions will revolve around routes to finding new markets for East African musicians, DJs and producers - regionally and globally.
Undertaken by Santuri’s David Tinning and Alina Oswald, the research was conducted over the past year in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Germany and the UK, and offers some interesting and exciting avenues for exploration.
As a part of this discussion, we’ll be sharing insights into the creation of the latest Msafiri Zawose record, and the subsequent tour in the UK. We’ll be joined by Msafiri and his tour collaborator Magnus Metha, both of who will perform live later in the evening in a special album launch party.
