Mary, Star of the Sea School
"Achieving for today...Preparing for tomorrow"
A Message from
Your Principal

Aloha Mary, Star of the Sea School Ohana,

It is hard to    believe that the  second half of  the school year  has reached  our doorsteps.   First off, I am  happy to  welcome five  students to our Star Ohana:  Kaiwi Loui, Andy and Ann Kim, Towa Nakaoka, and Justin Ellis.

Second  semester starts  off with plenty  of new and exciting opportunities for our STAR students and families to get involved!

To begin, we are excited to announce that our Star of the Sea Church and Middle School Youth Ministry, “The Edge” will kick off this Friday, January 15th from 5:30 to 8:00 pm.  The event will be filled with fun, food, games, and music and we strongly encourage all our middle school students to attend!
This year we    invite you and    your families  to run for your  school, Mary,  Star of the Sea by participating in the Hawaii 2016 Keiki Great Aloha Run.  Registration details are located on the attached flyer.  Mahalo to our MSOS parent Toni Bissen for volunteering to oversee this school event!
Many of you may have already learned through our Parish bulletin, that our Bishop, Most Reverend Larry Silva officially declared the name of our church and schools to include the title "Mary". Star of the Sea is the title that refers to Mary, and the modification was made to help clarify to those who might not otherwise know.

Furthermore, our weeklong celebration of Catholic Education is also just around the corner.  We look forward to the wonderful events that are organized for the week by our Catholic School Committee of teachers.

Catholic Schools' Week details are forthcoming; however, please mark your calendars as we will honor our first semester honors and citizenship recipients at our Catholic Schools' Week Kick Off mass scheduled for Friday, January 29th.  We hope you can be there to celebrate our school and your children’s hard work and achievements.
This semester, we also welcome Kumu Kapualei Hanohano-Tripp to our Foreign Language Team and wish Mr. Keith Haugen a happy retirement.  Kumu Kapualei has earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Hawaiian Language and Culture, a Masters degree in Education, and has dual certification in Elementary Education K-6 and Hawaiian Language Immersion K-12.  She brings to MSOS a wealth of teaching experience and we are excited to have her join our Ohana.

And finally, as we begin the second half of the school year, let us remember the two most important gifts we can provide our children:  faith and knowledge.

Learning to read or solve an algebraic expression may come easily to some but challenging to others. Therefore, teaching isn't just about ensuring that students obtain the academic knowledge that is required to proceed to the next grade.  At, Mary, Star of the Sea School, we provide the most important life-long tool of success: Trust in the Lord and the faith to overcome the hurdles that our students may face.
This month's theme, "Trustworthiness" is an important quality we need to invest time in building in the lives of our children. Trusting in the Lord is of utmost importance, yet, God calls His children to also be trustworthy. If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities” (Luke 16:10).
Raising our children to understand the importance of integrity and honesty will help many other areas of life come more easily to them.  Having patience, never withholding love and displaying trustworthiness, yourself, will also go a long way in raising trustworthy children.  God doesn’t expect us to be perfect, but we can teach our children to be as good as their word and faithful with the things God has put before them.
With sincerest aloha,
Margaret Rufo, Principal
