WINE MATTERS | December 2016

Taking stock of our achievements over the past year, two particular brands stand out: our stalwart Balance which has once again rewarded with great value and growth, and then Survivor. Over-delivering on quality and brimming with charm, this exciting brand has won accolade upon accolade – and to celebrate we'll soon be launching the Survivor MCC!
– GERHARD VAN DER WATH (MANAGING DIRECTOR)

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

South Africa’s wine grape crop for 2016 was 1 406 129 tons, more than 70 000 tons (5%) smaller than in 2015 (1 477 048 tons). It is estimated that wine production for 2016  amounted to 1 091 million litres, calculated at an average recovery of  776 litres per ton of grapes, compared to 1 154 million litres in 2015 – 63 million litres less. The drop in crop volumes is ascribed to drought conditions as well as to the fact that more vineyards have been removed than planted over the past number of years.

The latest indications are that total stock levels in the SA wine industry have dropped by approximately 40 million litres from December 2015 (533.7 million litres) to December 2016 (494.6 million litres). This is ascribed to the following:

  • Smaller 2016 crop
  • Local wine sales which have risen by some 7% over the past 12 months
  • Wine exports which have risen by 2% over the past 12 months
  • For the first time since 2008 total sales (local and exports) have exceeded wine production and this has led to lower, better balanced stock levels

The most recent indications are that the 2017 wine grape crop will probably not exceed the 2016 vintage. The main irrigation dams in the larger production areas are presently almost 10% lower than over the same period last year.

Balancing volume will be of the utmost importance in the future.

BRAND-NEW TASTING ROOM
Overhex’s attractive new tasting room has been completed in time for the Festive Season. Situated at Overhex Winery & Bistro on the R60 between Worcester and Robertson, it offers exciting new tasting menus and a great winelands experience. The tasting room was designed by Johan and Michelle Strydom of Jam Interiors and is a worthy showcase for the award-winning Overhex wine ranges.
OVER-DELIVERING ON VALUE AND QUALITY
The Survivor Chenin Blanc 2016  recently scored 91 points in the Decanter South African Chenin Blanc tasting and further proved its worth by receiving a 4.5-star allocation in the 2017 John Platter Wine Guide. The Survivor Pinotage 2015, Survivor Sauvignon Blanc 2016 and Balance Winemaker's Selection Chenin Blanc 2016 followed suit.

“This wine portfolio is going from strength to strength with the 2015 Survivor Pinotage confirming the uniqueness of Pinotage in the international wine world. It also serves as a standard for the brand and all future wines to be created here at Overhex Wines International,” said managing director Gerhard van der Wath.
