WINE MATTERS - April 2016

"While always recognising Nature as the major player in the quality of our wines, we at Overhex take pride in enhancing this with a dedicated and professional support team."
– GERHARD VAN DER WATH (MANAGING DIRECTOR)

HARVEST 2016 – AN OVERVIEW BY WINEMAKER BEN SNYMAN

2016 was a challenging vintage with smaller than normal harvests all over South Africa due to the dry winter conditions. Irrigation dams had less water than usual while warmer winter temperatures meant earlier ripening, in some cases the grapes were picked two weeks earlier than normal.

In spite of the heatwave that hit the South African Winelands in October, we at Overhex were able to preserve good balance in our vineyards, thanks to well-timed viticultural interventions.

Due to the dryer season the berries were smaller with greater concentration, especially in the warmer regions. The Coastal Region experienced lower night temperatures which in turn contributed to even, slow ripening and therefore exceptional balance and quality.

We believe Overhex Wines International had a good harvest and we have great expectations for our 2016 wines.
SUCCESS IS A WELL-BALANCED TEAM
After 11 years at Overhex Wines International our production executive, Natalie van Rooyen, has decided to move on. Many thanks for your generous contribution, Natalie. We wish you everything of the best and will certainly miss you.

Ben Snyman, also an invaluable member of the Overhex team over the past six years, will succeed Natalie as production executive. With a degree in Viticulture and Oenology and extensive international experience he is very well equipped for the job. While heading up production Ben will remain closely involved in the creation of our top performing Survivor wine range. Sanmarie Snyman, a Stellenbosch University graduate, will take care of technical and quality aspects of all wines. Sanmari has been a member of the Overhex family for the past year and has extensive experience in the wine industry which makes her a perfect fit for this job.

Chantelle Potgieter  sales and operational  director, will take care of all commercial aspects regarding bulk and bottled products. These moves are in line with our belief in creating opportunities for our team members by giving them exposure to a variety of functions.

ONE GOOD THING LEADS TO ANOTHER
Inspired by the success of our Survivor range, Overhex recently launched an exciting sub-brand, Survivor Offspring. As the name implies, the fun concept is based on Survivor the Nguni cow’s offspring with the attractive packaging reflecting this connection. Survivor Offspring presently comprises two easy-drinking blends: a fruity Sauvignon Blanc Chenin Blanc Viognier and a versatile, food-friendly Syrah Pinotage Cabernet Sauvignon.
GOOD FOOD AND GOOD WINE

Why not try our Survivor Pinotage and Bobotie Pairing - what can be more delicious (or more South African)? Recipe by Jamie Oliver.
