WINE MATTERS - January 2016

"As discussed by our general manager below, this year’s vintage poses challenges to both our vineyard and cellar teams. At Overhex however we have always maintained that quality is far more important than quantity and we look forward to making 2016 a vintage to remember."
– GERHARD VAN DER WATH (Managing Director)

The past two years saw Overhex crushing 10 100 and 10 500 tons of grapes respectively. Due to the drought and heat waves experienced across the South African Winelands the 2016 yield will undoubtedly be smaller. For example: one of our Swartland producers with dryland vineyards expects a reduction in yield of up to 60%. The rest of our Swartland producers can rely on supplementary irrigation to ensure that their grapes will ripen optimally with average to good yields.

We anticipate a decrease of some 20% in our coastal vineyards while our producers in the Worcester region with sufficient irrigation should show a decrease of approximately 5%. All in all it is envisaged that the yield will be 10% down on the previous two years.

Having said that, the first grapes (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and the Pinotage for our rosé wines) arrived at the cellar a week ago. Bunches and berries are noticeably smaller than in recent years, however the quality is excellent and we have great expectations for the resultant wines.
Our vibrant portfolio (ranging from entry level to super premium) caters for contemporary wine lovers the world over and at OWI we enjoy showcasing our wines at top local and international events. Already lined up for next year are:

Tokyo Japan (8 to 11 March 2016)

- “The largest annual food and beverage tradeshow in Asia.”

Düsseldorf Germany (13 to 15 March 2016)

- “ProWein is and remains the world’s leading trade fair for wine professionals.”

Hong Kong (24 to 26 May 2016)

- “Asia’s unmissable trade-only wine and spirits show.”

Matchless quality, timeless personality … in fact, when it comes to light-hearted enjoyment with real style, Balance Bubbly is simply peerless. And now the delectable duo – Boldly Brut and Sweet Temptation – are dressed in an appealing new oval-shaped label, ready to capture the world anew!

No less than three Balance wines will be featuring on the SAA Wine List (both international and local flights) during 2016. The first wine to delight passengers’ palates is the Balance Winemaker’s Selection Pinot Grigio (750 ml) to be served during April 2016 in Premium Economy Class. This wine is beautifully balanced with fresh flavours of melon and pear complemented by a dash of zingy citrus.

From June to September 2016 SAA Economy Class passengers can look forward to enjoying another two wines from the Balance range. The Balance Muscat (187 ml) has billowing aromas of rose petal and ripe fruit which follow through on the well-balanced palate. The Balance Winemaker’s Selection Shiraz (187 ml)  shows opulent berry fruit with an elegant hint of spice.
