Yay or neigh?

It's the midterm homestretch, and the end of Week 5. That's right... it's finally Derby weekend, y'all, and whether you're headed down to Louisville on the early bus Sunday (or you've already left), we've got some hat tips for you (*wink) on how to make the most of your Run for the Roses.

Ever wonder who's behind these killer issues? Think you have what it takes to Daybreak? We're looking for writers, social media mavens/mavericks, a website manager, and more to join our team. Informational meeting on May 14th at 12:15 p.m. More details to come along with the inevitable Campus Groups listing.

May Flowers

After some rain this morning, expect the sun to shine today and through the weekend. Break out your picnic basket, pull up a textbook lakeside or get the most of your Divvy Bike membership 'cause today's high is 70°F (21°C) with similar temps expected Saturday and Sunday.

Hub Happenings

  • LinkedIn Live. It's reunion weekend which means you can meet Kellogg alums in the flesh. Investment Management Club, Real Estate Club, Asian Management Association/Southeast Asia Club/Chinese Business Club/India Management Club, KTech and HMA are all hosting alumni events on Saturday. Check Campus Groups for deets.
  • Dressing on the side. Spending four days a week on the road can be tough on the waistline, but the Wellness and Consulting Clubs are here to help you how to rock your new gig and stay svelte (12:15 p.m., L110; waitlist only).
  • Wish I was... Hear from 2017 Kellogg alums about what they wish they knew before heading back into the workforce full-time (12:15 p.m., register with the CMC).
  • I'm a cool mom. Join the Latter-Day Saints Student Association for a Parenting Skills class to help you balance your family and work/MBA life (5:15 p.m., L120).
  • Bravery, grit, buzzwords. Tickets are still available for Saturday night's Special K! show (Saturday, May 5, 6:00 p.m., Norris Center).
  • Shred some gnar. Saturday's also the last day to register for Ski Trip 2019. If you're Aspen us, it's gonna be a great time (Register here).

Teach me how to Derby

The most exciting two minutes in sports, the 143rd Kentucky Derby, festivities start at 6:34 p.m. ET and the race begins at 6:46 p.m. For those keeping score at home, that's more than twelve hours after the buses leave Evanston, so pace yourself kids. Temps are expected to hit 81°F (27°C) with scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. Here's what you need to know:

  • Basic. 20 three-year-old horses race 1.25 miles around a dirt track at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, for the chance to win $2 million and the first race in the Triple Crown
  • Packing list. Floppy hat. Seersucker. Tickets. Here's what you can and can't bring to the race.
  • My Old Kentucky Home. The Derby anthem will be sung before the race. Brush up on the lyrics here.
  • Make me a Mint Julep. A delightful concoction of bourbon, simple syrup and fresh mint served over crushed ice in a silver cup. Town and Country has 11 recipes to try if you're watching from home.
  • Get lucky. The odds on favorite to win is Justify, but Magnum Moon is undefeated in four starts. Don't discount Mendelssohn who hails from the U.A.E. or our personal fav, My Boy Jack, whose name is the cutest. More betting tips for first-timers here and information about all 20 horses here

Get in the Mood

By our count the drive down to Louisville is about six hours, and while this playlist won't get you all the way, it'll help ease you into the festivities.

Raise the Roof

Sticking close to home this weekend? The return of the sun means we here at Daybreak are ready to hit up the rooftop bar scene. Thankfully, we've done the Googling so you don't have to - just bring your sunnies.

  • Cindy's. The best roof in the Loop.
  • Fountainhead. 126 whiskies. 26 beers on tap. Ravenswood.
  • Zed451. Watermelon sangria (yum) in River North.
  • Gene's Sausage Shop. Rooftop vibes paired with 40+ types of smoked sausages in Lincoln Square.
  • Apogee. Firepits and a spacious lawn for those chilly evenings in River North.
  • Reggie's. A self-proclaimed "Trainwreck Rooftop Deck" in South Loop.
