SCA at Work!
The Student Conservation Association will once again be having strong presence at the Refuge this summer. The refuge serves as the home base for the SCA Philadelphia/Camden Community Program. Three of SCA’s seven community crews will be operating directly out of the refuge. The Heinz Crew 1 will be working on projects throughout the Refuge. SCA crew at workProjects will include Trail improvements, Pollinator Garden maintenance, mulching viewing areas around benches and planting native plants just to name a few. There will also be two other crews in Eastwick and Kingsessing neighborhoods doing a number of restoration projects. So be on the lookout for the students in the blue shirts and yellow hard hats this summer and say hello.

Are you looking for a different kind of walk? Now is the perfect time to look for colorful insects. Join walk volunteer Cliff Hence’s butterfly walks this summer! Not only are butterflies beautiful, but they are also important pollinators. Cliff is widely known as a “butterfly whisperer” who can spot and identify even the tiniest of these delicate insects. In addition to his walks, Cliff will lead a butterfly survey at the Refuge on July 17. More on that next month! Also this summer, Lynn Roman and Dale Blair will lead a birds and dragonflies walk in July, and Edie Parnum will be leading a birds and butterflies walk in August.
