Industry Survey: Food Processing Industry Strategic Capacity Building

Exclusive to BCFPA Members

The BC Food Processors Association and the Small Scale Food Processor Association are partnering in a pilot project titled: “Food Processing Industry Strategic Capacity Building”.  The objectives of the pilot project are to enhance the food processing industry associations’ ability and capacity to;
  •          provide value to the sector;
  •          act as strategic partners for the Province.
We have prepared an industry survey for our respective processor members to understand and validate the needs of food and beverage processors across BC.  Your responses will contribute to the recommendations the two associations will provide to the Provincial Government and the NPF design and implementation.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes and can be accessed by clicking on the following link:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PCF3MNQ

Industry Wage Survey Available Now

We recently surveyed 25 member companies to determine wage and benefits information and statistics. This information is a great resource in helping your organization assess wages for hourly and salaried employees with information on more than 20 employment categories. Being informed on industry wages allows you to create a compensation plan that will ensure the retention of employees and avoid a high turnover rate due to low wages.

The cost of the survey is $1,000 to BCFPA members and $1200 for non-members; the cost is set well below other industry surveys.

Contact Christine Bricknell at the BCFPA to purchase a copy of the survey; accounting@bcfpa.ca; 604-371-4245

For more information on the survey contact Valerie Henderson who conducted the survey and is available to answer any questions; valerie@effectivehr.ca

The Canada-B.C. Jobs Grant program has set aside up to $3 million in available funds to allow manufacturing and Agrifood businesses to invest in skills training for their employees. The BC Alliance for Manufacturing is the Government-approved delivery partner for employers in the Manufacturing & Agrifoods Sectors.  As a founding member of the Alliance, BCFPA members can utilize their resources – at no cost to your business – to assess eligibility and training needs, identify training options, submit applications and support your business throughout the process. Delivery partners help ensure that employers meet all eligibility requirements and are aware of their obligations under the CJG program.

Last year, the funding was fully allocated within 6 weeks. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please visit the Alliance website for more details at http://www.manufacturingbc.org/cjg.

WHAT IS THE CANADA-BC JOBS GRANT
The Canada-B.C. Job Grant (CJG) is an employer driven cost-sharing program that supports employers in training their current or future employees.

Eligible employers can maximize their budgets by qualifying for at least 2/3 reimbursement* of the cost of all training, up to a maximum of $10,000 per participant per fiscal year.  In addition, eligible employers hiring unemployed British Columbians can qualify for a full reimbursement* of all cost of training, up to a maximum of $15,000 per participant per fiscal year.

The CJG aims to increase participation of British Columbians in the labour force by helping them develop the skills they need to find and keep a job. The CJG is also an opportunity for employers to invest in training that is better aligned to job opportunities. Please refer to CJG Eligibility Criteria to fully understand the eligibility requirements of the program before you apply.

The Water Sustainability Act

Implementation of usage fees for commercial water consumption in BC

About the legislation:
The WSA came into effect on January 1, 2016.  http://engage.gov.bc.ca/watersustainabilityact/the-proposal-3/

In a nutshell:
  • Under the existing Water Act there are no fees or applications required by a company to pump and use groundwater.
  • The new Water Sustainability Act (WSA) applies to any NON-domestic usage of groundwater – any commercial use (all food processors).
  • There will be two charges associated with groundwater due to this new Act:
    • A one-time application fee for new or existing groundwater activities, which is a company’s responsibility to apply for (see this link) – this ranges in fees from $500 to $10,000 (Nestle Waters falls under the $10,000 range, most processors would be $1,000)
    • A water rental fee (same link as above) which depends on consumption activity but for most is the greater of $200 per year or $2.25 per 1000 m3
Please note: The application fee will be waived if a company with a pre-existing groundwater draw submits their application any time during 2016.
