BCFPA Announces Release of Industry Economic Impact Study

The BC Food Processors Association (BCFPA) has released this report highlighting the significant financial impact that food and beverage processors provide to BC’s economy.  The report - carried out by MNP - provides an economic impact assessment as well as an analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the BC food and beverage processing industry.

Processing revenues total over $8.5 billion - over 70% of the entire Agrifoods sector, including the Agriculture and Seafood sectors. The top three industry strengths identified are access to markets (domestic, US, Asia and others), access to transportation infrastructure (road, rail, marine and air) and access to a wealth of agriculture commodities and suppliers. BC has one of the most diverse Agrifood industries in Canada, producing more than 200 agricultural commodities and 100 seafood species.  This serves to provide diversity for BC’s processing industry.

Being informed on industry wages allows you to create a compensation plan that will ensure the retention of employees and avoid a high turnover rate due to low wages.

The Water Sustainability Act

Implementation of usage fees for commercial water consumption in BC

About the legislation:
The WSA came into effect on January 1, 2016.

In a nutshell:
  • Under the existing Water Act there are no fees or applications required by a company to pump and use groundwater.
  • The new Water Sustainability Act (WSA) applies to any NON-domestic usage of groundwater – any commercial use (all food processors).
  • There will be two charges associated with groundwater due to this new Act:
    • A one-time application fee for new or existing groundwater activities, which is a company’s responsibility to apply for (see this link) – this ranges in fees from $500 to $10,000 (Nestle Waters falls under the $10,000 range, most processors would be $1,000)
    • A water rental fee (same link as above) which depends on consumption activity but for most is the greater of $200 per year or $2.25 per 1000 m3
Please note: The application fee will be waived if a company with a pre-existing groundwater draw submits their application any time during 2016.
