Industry Sales Records Celebrated at BC Agrifoods Day

British Columbia’s agriculture, seafood and processing industries grew to $12.3 billion in sales in 2014 – an increase of $700 million from 2013.  Food & beverage processing led the charge, growing by $500 million to grow to a total of $8.5 billion, representing nearly 70% of the Agrifoods Sector, which includes Agriculture, Seafood and Food & Beverage Processing.

Exports of BC products also grew in 2014, rising to $3 billion in sales to 150 countries.  The food & beverage processing industry in BC consists of about 1,800 companies, with approximately 90% of those being small and micro sized businesses.

The BC Government declared November 3rd Agrifoods Day, to increase awareness and appreciation for the high quality and diverse range of products produced in BC.  At the announcement in Victoria, the BCFPA received a proclamation on behalf of it’s members who contributed significantly to the industry’s overall growth.

BCFPA Particpates in BC Hydro’s PowerSmart Forum

The BCFPA team participated in BC Hydro’s PowerSmart Forum on October 27th at the Vancouver Trade & Convention Centre.  We had an exhibitor booth set up to talk to Forum attendees, both processors and other industry stakeholders, about the food & beverage processing sector in BC, including BCFPA membership and events.

Also at the event, James Donaldson took part in an expert panel of speakers in a Forum session called Survive and Thrive in B.C.'s Manufacturing Sector: Trends that will impact your bottom line, offering insights into the global industry trends that are expected to impact B.C.'s manufacturing and food processing sectors.

Food in Canada Executive Roundtable

On September 23, the BCFPA teamed up with MNP to conduct an Executive Industry Roundtable.  This roundtable discussion brought together executives from the food processing industry in BC to discuss the major issues facing their businesses. An article based on this discussion will be published in the November/December 2015 edition of Food In Canada magazine.

This year, the theme of the roundtable discussion was: Growth Strategies for B.C. Processors

Participants of the Executive Roundtable were: Kirk Homenick, President of Naturally Homegrown Foods Ltd; Ian Walker, President of Left Coast Naturals; Rick Brar, CEO of International Herbs Ltd; Rahim Talib, CEO of Meadow Fresh Dairy; Peter Higgins, President of Purdys Chocolatiers; Dave McAnerney, CEO of Sun Rype; James Pratt, Partner of ProSnack; Dave Eto, CEO of BC Dairy Association.
