BCFPA Partners With BC Hydro to Bring You the Business Energy Advisor Program

The BCFPA has a strong partnership with BC Hydro. One of the greatest benefits to being a BCFPA member is having access to a unique service called the Business Energy Advisor Program. This popular service, available through BC Hydro, has helped over 700 BC businesses access incentive funds and save millions of kilowatt hours of energy.

The Business Energy Advisor Program provides expert advice and support to incorporate energy efficiency into your facility.   To meet the growing demand for appointments, the program has recently expanded from six to eight advisors in the province.

As a business it can be very difficult to manage energy efficiency especially if you’re a small to medium sized organization with limited resources. Just keeping track of the many different energy efficiency technologies and options available can be very confusing for example, how to distinguish between the wide varieties of LEDs available and understanding the best technology for your facility’s unique needs.

Grasping the concept of energy management can start with the simplest of tasks; understanding your energy bills and monitoring consumption. BC Hydro’s online platform MyHydro gives manufacturers the ability to see their energy consumption up to the day before and for customers on LGS and MGS rates they can drill down to 5 minute increments which can be incredibly useful in identifying anomalies early before they create significant costs.
A Business Energy Advisor can help you understand the many new technologies for your facility, and show you how to manage your energy with free online energy tracking tools.

Energy Advisors will also share easy, low-cost efficiency upgrades and best practices tips such as:
  • Cost effective efficiency opportunities available at your facility
  • Importance of following equipment operating procedures to maintain savings
  • Tips on operating procedures that will help you save energy and money
  • Free tools to engage your workforce in your energy management efforts
Your customers care about your green business practices - Energy Advisors can help you get the recognition you deserve for your sustainability efforts.
We encourage our members to take advantage of this free service to find out what’s right for your facility. At no cost to any organization, why not participate? Advisors regularly meet in person with business owners to help them evaluate their energy usage.

New Meeting Structure for BCFPA Peer Groups 


As a result of feedback from the co-chairs of the BCFPA Peer Groups to provide more opportunity for groups to meet together to discuss issues of mutual interest, we have created The BCFPA Breakfast Series!

Our goal is to BE RELEVANT to members.   The Breakfast Series, powerhouse meetings will be held the first Thursday of every other month starting Thursday, November 5th, from 8-11am.  The Breakfast Series will bring all peer groups together to drive the relevant content, issues and topics that are important to you.  Breakout sessions with individual Peer Groups will engage you in relevant content of the broader topic. All Peer groups will contribute to components of the Breakfast Series topics.

Broad Topics:
  • Quality – GFSI, standards, regulatory
  • Safety – Occupational Health and Safety, Food Safety
  • Leadership –CEO’s, finance and sales and marketing leaders speaking to leadership issues.  Forward looking, strategic company leadership. 
  • Innovation in processing
  • People/Employees – Human Capital, skills training, professional development, workplace culture.
  • Best Practices – Lean Practices 
  • Labelling, Packaging,
  • Marketing and Sales
Peer Groups will network via the breakout sessions, and will continue to meet separately as needed (monthly, quarterly or any time), under the decision and direction of the Co-Chairs.  Thank you Co-Chairs for all your input and collaboration on what we hope will be an exciting new meeting format.  


BCFPA Events Recap

HACCP training session at Purdy's Chocolatier
In the last two months BCFPA has held three food safety training sessions; 80 food processors received targeted food safety training!

Sanitation Workshop; August 27, 2015

Held at Neovatec, this workshop aimed to improve food safety and quality, reduce incidence of contamination and increase product shelf life.  The facilitator reviewed a range of topics that provide an overview of cleaning and sanitation for food processing, the best hygienic practices, fostering of a “sanitation culture” that all help prevent bacteria cross-contamination in equipment and helps prevent product recalls and the consequences. 

Allergens Management Workshop; September 11, 2015

Held at Mark-Crest Foods, this workshop was designed to highlight food allergen awareness, a key issue in the food industry today. The course outlined the causes and effects related to food allergens, the complexities associated with the management and prevention of food allergens, and presented the regulatory requirements associated with food allergens in Canada.

Two HACCP Sessions; September 24 & 25, 2015

Held at Purdy’s Chocolatier, this course provided personnel involved in working towards a certification in HACCP, British Retail Consortium (BRC), Safe Quality Food (SQF 2000) and other certifications with the knowledge necessary to develop and implement a HACCP plan that will meet the rigorous requirements of a certification audit. Topics include: overview of HACCP, its role and benefits in safe food production; the globalization of markets; management commitment; roles and responsibilities of those involved in the certification process, resources and reference materials for HACCP plan development.

For all workshops, participants that pass the quiz receive a nationally recognized certificate signed by BCFPA and FPHRC for their accomplishments!

** The training was offered at no cost to eligible companies through the Post-Farm Food Safety Program (PFFSP). All courses are facilitated by Food Processing Human Resources Council (FPHRC) accredited facilitators, whom are also PFFSP Food Safety Advisors.  Evaluations of the courses by participants have shown that the courses, manuals and materials are extremely helpful, and that the facilitators are experts in these topics. BCFPA is an accredited delivery agent for Food Processing HR Council training and FPHRC sets the national occupational standards for the industry. **
