ParaSport and Recreation PEI to Host
2nd Annual Big Dog Convenience/Irving Night Dash

ParaSport and Recreation PEI is hosting the 2nd Annual Big Dog Convenience/Irving Night Dash on Friday August 12th.

The event will feature a 5 Km Run or Walk and a 10 Km Run.  All three events will start after the sun sets at The Mount Continuing Care Community. All registered participants will receive glow accessories and the first 200 to register will receive a headlamp and an event t-shirt.  In addition to the race kit goodies, participants are invited following their race, to stay for the “After Glow Party” where a local DJ will be rocking some tunes.  There will also be hot food, snacks and drinks.   This is an event you do not want to miss!

ParaSport and Recreation PEI is also looking for volunteers to help out with this year's run. If you are interested in helping out contact the ParaSport and Recreation PEI office.
ParaSport and Recreation PEI hosted the 2016 Junior East Wheelchair Basketball Championships on May 14th & 15th at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagment.

The 3-on-3 tournament featured the top junior-aged athletes from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, P.E.I. and Quebec who are eligible to participate in the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

Teams included in the 9-Point Division (Group A) Quebec 1, Ontario 1, Quebec 2 and Ontario 2. The Open Point Division (Group B) includes Quebec 3, P.E.I., New Brunswick, Nova Scotia 1 and Nova Scotia 2.

Quebec 1 won gold in the 9-Point Division, while New Brunswck took home gold in the Open Division.
The 2nd Annual ParaSport Festival took place on April 26th at the Chi Wan Young Sports Centre. 80 students with a disability participated in the event. The festival gave students an opportunity to try out a variety of parasports that are currently offered or could potentially be offered on PEI. Above are some of the volunteers who helped out with the festival, including the Bluefield High School Leadership Class.
ParaSport and Recreation PEI Executive Director, Tracy Stevenson and Treasurer, Bob Kenny present out-going Vice-President Don Spence with a gift for all of his work with ParaSport and Recreation PEI. Craig Cameron will be taking over the position of Vice-President.

Wheelchair Basketball Junior Program to Begin This Fall
ParaSport and Recreation PEI will be starting a Wheelchair Basketball Junior Program in the fall for youth between the ages of 8 and 16. The program is an initiative to help recruit younger athletes to the sport.

To promote the upcoming program ParaSport and Recreation PEI will be offering a series of Have-A-Go demonstrations for the Eastern Region Sports Council, West Prince Sports Council, Camp Seggie and Holland College.

ParaSport and Recreation PEI would like to extend a HUGE thank-you to George Curtis who recently donated this very cool handcycle to our organization. Thank-you George! Your generous donation will be added to our Equipment Loan Program. A reminder that our Equipment Loan Program is FREE for ParaSport and Recreation PEI members and includes sport chairs, handcycles, goalball equipment, tennis equipment, boccia sets, etc. If you are interested in signing out equipment contact the ParaSport and Recreation PEI office.
ParaSport and Recreation PEI to Start New
Wheelchair Tennis Program

ParaSport and Recreation PEI and Tennis PEI  are partnering to host FREE Wheelchair Tennis Have A Go Demonstrations on Tuesday, July 19th at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall and on Thursday, July 21st at Credit Union Place in Summerside. Both sessions will run from 6:00-7:30pm.
This is a great opportunity to try out a new sport in a fun and interactive atmosphere! Wheelchair tennis is for people with a disability, however this clinic is open for anyone to try out.
Regular wheelchair tennis programming will begin on Tuesday, July 26th in Cornwall and will run the remainder of the summer.

ParaSport and Recreation PEI held its Annual Provincial Bowling Championships for individuals with a disability at the Murphy’s Community Center on May 29th.  The event saw over 20 bowlers participate in 5 different categories:  Youth, Female Seated and Standing and Male Seated and Standing. Above Top Male Bowler, Jonathan Harper is presented his award Vicki Pettipas, ParaSport and Recreation PEI volunteer.
