Focus Physio & Pilates Sponsor an Athlete Program

We have been toying with the idea of sponsoring an athlete for quite some time now. Why would we want to do this? As physiotherapists with knowledge and qualifications in exercise science, SFMA, FMS & YBT we have the skill set to help someone achieve their goals in training and competition. We wanted someone who has BIG goals.
Then came along Melissa Robertson. She is an elite endurance trail runner and she came to Focus Physio & Pilates looking to do Pilates to help with her knee injury. We got to know her and recognised that she was exactly the kind of person we were looking for. We were not particularly looking for a runner, just someone who shares the same ideals and passion for training that we do. Someone who does it just because they love it and they can’t imagine life without it.

We did not decide to sponsor Melissa because she was at the top of her game and in peak performance shape, it was during a time when she was a little down and out because she could not run due to pain. Melissa has some big goals coming up that we knew we could help her with through physiotherapy, mobility, strength training and movement education.

Have a read of her website www.crackneck.com and get to know her too, as you will be seeing her around the clinic a lot in the future. We are happy to welcome her on board as our first sponsored athlete!

Erik Runs the Great North Walk

On September 10th Erik will run 100km along the Great North Walk. The GNW100 is primarily technical trail and fire trail with a few back roads thrown in and all up has over 3800m of ascent in the course. Erik has competed in this race before in 2014 on a day that saw the heat rise above 40 degrees. They have since moved the race a little earlier in the year so let’s hope the weather is a bit milder for him this time around.
This time around, the hard work has been done, we monitored his movement competency using FMS throughout the buildup. All those hours on the trails have not hindered his movement quality, he has earned his taper and is ready to go! One of the key guiding principles in our clinic is do not put fitness on dysfunction. We practice what we preach!
Good luck Erik!

New skills for the clinic

Mobility and Stability for Performance

Last weekend Erik, Aleisha and Alanna attended a course in Sydney with one of Australia’s best sports physiotherapists Greg Dae. We have done a lot with him over the past few years and he never fails to provide quality information and practical skills. While the course is designed for use with athletes, the beauty of it is that is applicable to everyone.
We came out inspired, focused, and ready to put it all into practice.

APMA Annual Pilates Conference

At the end of the month Aleisha, Katrina and Susan will attend the Australian Pilates Method Association's 3 day conference in Melbourne. The weekend will be jam packed with new research, lectures, classes and loads of tips and tricks for us to bring back to the studio.

Aleisha and Erik are getting hitched!

Some of you may have heard a rumour that we are getting married, and its true. We will be taking off to Hawaii with our family and close friends for 3 weeks in October for a wedding, honeymoon and holiday all rolled in to one.
What does this mean for the clinic?
All Pilates classes will continue as normal.
Aleisha and Erik will be away from October 1st -21st.
Physiotherapy will resume on Monday October 24th.
Our instructor Katrina has kindly volunteered to look after all things administration. If you need to make changes or book in to another class, please call 49478838.
In the meantime if you know that you have dates scheduled that you need to change, please let us know so that we can make life as easy as possible for Katrina while we are away.
Check out the video to see the location of our ceremony!

Cancellations
Late cancellation of classes and physio appointments have improved, thank you for your consideration.
We understand that sometimes you have other commitments and that you need to reschedule, we just ask you to give plenty of notice where possible. As we have mentioned in the past, most sessions have a waitlist which means someone is hoping to receive a call letting them know we have a spot for them. If we can’t help you, please let us help others.
For those of you attending Pilates classes, remember that we can only help you to achieve your goals if you turn up on a regular basis.

Youtube Channel

We've updated our youtube channel with exercises we commonly prescribe in physiotherapy and pilates sessions to help with ensuring compliance with self management strategies. They serve as a a reference point to help remember how to perform exercises and should not be attempted unless they have been prescribed. We are confident that they will work much better than stick figures and obscure names of exercises. Enjoy!
