Developing East Arnhem Limited (DEAL) understands this is a very challenging time for East Arnhem’s business community. The responses to COVID-19 are already having significant impacts on some of our businesses, and with the rapidly changing situation we expect many more to be affected.

DEAL’s priority during this time is to support the survival of local businesses, keep as many people in jobs and in the region as possible, encourage local spending and boost regional access to stimulus measures to keep the East Arnhem economy running.

Business continuity planning

We are facing unprecedented challenges and change to our business community. DEAL is committed to supporting businesses to understand how they can respond. DEAL will be holding a free webinar for all East Arnhem businesses tomorrow Tuesday 24 March from 10-11.30am. This will be run by TCA Accountants and Bookkeepers and will cover:
  • Business continuity planning – what it is, why businesses should have this plan and how to create a plan
  • Steps you can take to keep your business operating during this pandemic
  • Government stimulus packages – information on what is available now and how it can be accessed
DEAL is supporting businesses wishing to have an individual follow up session with TCA free of charge. Follow up sessions will be two hours and aim to provide an opportunity for you to have your business continuity plan reviewed, to help you to forecast cash flow and to seek advice specific to your circumstances.

Your business may not yet be impacted by responses to COVID-19, but it is critical that you are prepared, that you understand your risk and you know how you will respond if there are broader economic impacts as a result of COVID-19. All businesses are encouraged to attend. If you are unable to attend at this time but want to receive a recording of the session, please register via the link below.

Rent relief

DEAL currently rents properties to 79 businesses and organisations, housing over 690 residents of Nhulunbuy. We understand that for businesses, rental properties are critical to retaining staff, but are also a cost that may be difficult to sustain as a result of COVID-19 responses in the short term.

In recognition of the unprecedented circumstances, DEAL will be offering rent relief to our business tenants on a case by case basis from 1 April 2020. Rent relief, including the level of rent relief to be provided, will be assessed as part of supporting broader business continuity planning.

To access rent relief, businesses will need to demonstrate:
  • How responses to COVID-19 have impacted their operations
  • Business continuity planning, including how the business is adapting its activities where possible
  • What contribution rent relief will provide to business sustainability and the ability to retain staff
Businesses considering accessing rent relief are strongly encouraged to attend the business continuity planning webinar. To discuss rent relief options for your business, please contact the DEAL office on 08 8987 0558 or email and arrange a time. All meetings will be held via video-conference.

Regional stimulus

Over the coming weeks, DEAL will be developing further measures to support the regional economy. These are likely to include:
  • A campaign to incentivise spending at our local businesses to support their ongoing sustainability
  • Supporting East Arnhem businesses to unlock Northern Territory Government stimulus, by matching business contributions required to access stimulus

Get in touch with us

We have staff available to confidentially discuss your concerns and any impact this period of uncertainty may have on your business. All meetings are via video-conference at this point, and we can be available after business hours if that better suits your needs. To make an appointment, phone the office on 08 8987 0558 or email

Please be assured that DEAL is strongly committed to working in partnership with local businesses, and is continually reviewing the measures it can implement to support the regional economy. It is also important that we ensure any action DEAL takes does not unduly impact on our ability to be a proactive part of the economic recovery once we get through this period, or on the important contributions our housing works program makes to our local contractor businesses.

We are here on the ground with you in this surreal and ever-changing economic environment for Australia. We want you to know that we are in a strong position to continue to provide local businesses with the right support as this pandemic event unfolds over the coming months.

The businesses of East Arnhem have proven their resilience time and time again, we see no reason for that resilience to falter now, as we face this uncertainty together.

Again, if you need support, please reach out to us at DEAL. We will continue to keep in regular touch with business-related updates.
