Launching a Revolution

“You say you want a revolution?”
-John Lennon

“Revolution is about changing the world in which you work, (worship), and live... Of course, we all want to lead a revolution. Deep down, we all do want to change the world. Revolution means changing the order of things in (your congregation), your world…and changing them for the better!
-“How to Lead a Revolution”, Article by David Morey

“Something has got to change!” How many times have you said this in the past months? We are at a time when we can’t go back to the drawing board. We must go forward to the revolution!... As you read this, Rev. Myrna Bethke, Rev. Glenn Conaway (Delaware Bay DS as of July 1) and about 60 of the pastors from the Southern Region and across our Conference will be wrapping up a two-day Clergy Stewardship Retreat in Cape May, NJ.  The retreat on Revolutionary Stewardship is led by Scott McKenzie and based on his most recent book “Generosity Rising Lead a Stewardship Revolution in Your Church.“ Together, with Scott and Horizons Stewardship, we are launching a revolution in Stewardship that will unleash time, talent and treasure in congregations that are willing and ready to step up, celebrate and share God’s abundant generosity.

The term “revolution” is used intentionally. In corporations and organizations around the globe, leaders are finding that improving the existing systems incrementally is producing ever diminishing results. What is needed for reconfiguration is creativity, collaboration with energy and passion so that new models, methods and means emerge. The term “insurgent leadership” is being used by some today to describe the need to create movements in congregations, communities and companies that gather people to share in making a positive difference-“out of the box” and “off the map”.

Launching a revolution requires a few willing to step forward and then be joined by others willing to serve and lead. Myrna, Glenn and I are three “nuts” that have been dancing as we see signs of God’s abundance all around the Southern Region.  Some of this abundance you are aware of and some is yet to be discovered. We want to commend us all to heed Isaiah’s admonition,

“This is what God says…Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it? It is like a path in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.” -Isaiah 43:19

Dozens of pastors are growing together in the retreat, sharing insights and new ways of thinking about Stewardship so they might join in leading this insurgency with you. The issues faced in our communities are many, the challenges in our congregations are sizeable. This is no time to pull back or retreat. This is a time in which we must unite and move forward.

How will we do it? Together with God! Where will we get the resources needed? God will provide-in us and through us; as we step up, reordering our lives…our congregations to reflect the joy, wonder and abundance we have and are called to share.

Your congregation is invited to join the revolution and form a team to be trained to develop action plans for year round stewardship in your congregation. Registration fee is $10 per person. Click here to register for Track 1 which is designed for congregations with an average worship attendance of UNDER 250. Track 2 is designed for congregations with an average worship attendance of OVER 250. Registration for track 2 will open tomorrow. Click here to go to the event's page.

Unity and Abundance are two key words & values I want to write down and focus on this week. We are UNITED in Jesus Christ-not because we all listen to or watch the same news (Fox, CNN, BBC…) nor do we all hold similar political views. We are UNITED through the love and labor of Jesus Christ-His life, teachings, labor on the cross, death and resurrection. We are in this together, bound by God’s grace…given the boundless riches of Christ Jesus. We are stronger together! We also have more than we realize-it will become more apparent and available as lives are touched, stories shared and the joy of giving stirs in deeper ways within our hearts and congregations.

Come dance with us…the revolution has started!
