Dear Friends,

One of the books that I read this summer and highly recommend is Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman. It is a great book on helping leaders become more aware of their emotions when managing teams. We spend a lot of time on the technical aspects of leadership, but often give second place to the effect of emotions.

One of the statistics that struck me was that in service industries, for every 1% improvement in service climate, there is a 2% increase in revenue. There are two Starbucks that I frequently go to. One is about 15 minutes from my home and the other is in a rest stop on the Turnpike. The line is often long at the Starbucks near my home but people are willing to wait, myself included. However, the line is also often long at the rest stop, but I will not wait. The difference is the customer service between the two Starbucks. The servers at the rest stop Starbucks do not look happy, they are not engaged with the customers and sometimes you feel as if you are an inconvenience. At the Starbucks near my home, the servers know your name if you have been there a few times, they know your favorite drinks, and ask about your family.  It makes all the difference!

In service industries, for every 1% improvement in service climate, there is a 2% increase in revenue. For the two Starbucks mentioned, the increase is financial. But revenue increase doesn’t necessarily mean financial increase. I invite you to explore with your church leadership what implications this statistic has on how you will lead. What is the difference that you will make in your “service climate” in order to make an increase in your congregation’s vitality?  My challenge to those who lead and serve in the church, is to look at this statistic and see where it takes you in growing vitality!  I look forward to hearing what happens!

Peace,
Myrna
