“To BOLDLY Go Moving into 2017 in new ways”
Greeting! During these first days of 2017, I've had the Star-Trek sound track running through my mind. I've imagined what the Great Commission morphing with the opening dialogue from this space adventure.
These are the voyages of the Church. Its Christ given mission; to make disciples of all the world, to live out and teach all God has given to us and to build dynamic, life giving, community changing communities of faith, to boldly go where the Good News has not gone before…
John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church was one that modeled and called us to what many has been labeled by some “Holy Boldness”- a Spirit inspired and infused confidence and courage to step out, reach out, move out in new directions and take ministry and mission to new places, in dynamically different ways. I continue to mine lessons from the book Lead Like Wesley as boldness is essential for capturing the heart of the next generation.
J. Oswald Sanders, author of Spiritual Leadership, wrote this to perspective leaders, "more failure comes from an excess of caution than from bold experiments with new ideas…’the frontiers of the kingdom of God were never advanced by men and women of caution.’”
I encourage you to close your eyes, que up the sound track for the Star Trek theme song as you prayerfully ponder as pastors and laity leading congregations, what is God calling you toward with Holy Boldness in 2017?
“Past boldness is no assurance of future boldness. Boldness demands continual reliance on God's spirit.”
- Andy Stanley
"Most of our obstacles would melt away if, instead of cowering before them, we should make up our minds to walk boldly through them".
-Orison Swett Marden
"My parents taught me honesty, truth, compassion, kindness and how to care for people. Also, they encouraged me to take risks, to boldly go. They taught me that the greatest danger in life is not taking the adventure".
"Woodrow Wilson called for leaders who, by boldly interpreting the nation's conscience, could lift a people out of their everyday selves. That people can be lifted into their better selves is the secret of transforming leadership".
-James MacGregor Burns
"Stand upright, speak thy thoughts, declare The truth thou hast, that all may share; Be bold, proclaim it everywhere: They only live who dare.”
