“Generosity Rising”
Guest Writer Brian Roberts, Cape Atlantic District Superintendent

I had to pull over. I was amazed and momentarily transfixed! Tuesday evening, I left the Team Vital 6-month “check in” meeting at New Hope UMC in Millville and started home. As I turned onto a road heading east, there it was, HUGE and orange: a most beautiful harvest moon, looking the size of a dinner plate rising over the tree line. Pulling over into a parking lot, I spent several moments thanking God for the artistry of creation and the gift of watching the “SUPER MOON” rising.

It was a “Super Moon” because the moon was the closest to earth in its orbit so far this fall. It won’t get this close again until 2034. The reason the moon was so large as it rose was due to its proximity to Earth.

(Note: Nov. 13 & 14 the moon will rise and appear even larger)

During this 2016-2017 ministry and program year, we in the Southern Region are working on “Generosity Rising.” We’re focused on Stewardship and Generosity. This is an issue raised by many congregations across our region and throughout GNJ. Rev. Myrna Bethke and I have been working with Hector Burgos, Director of Connectional Ministries, to partner with Horizon Stewardship and Scott McKenzie, Ph.D. in developing an effective plan for supporting congregations, so Generosity and Stewardship rise in beautiful and surprising ways.

For willing and ready congregations, we will work with you to support growing closer to God and each other, and help you find ways to share stories of lives being transformed. We want to develop a contagious ministry that makes a difference. For those of you who have been a part of the Super Church Conferences, you may have already witnessed the Stewardship video produced by our excellent GNJ Communications Team. (A link will be out in this weekly e-newsletter the first week in Nov.)

In our Wesleyan Theology, the way we look at the world through our experience of faith all starts with God! God created the world and each of us “on purpose and for God’s purpose.” God has reached out and acted and continues to act in Jesus Christ for the world. As we engage the world and work together in connectional ministry, we may see the abundance of God loom larger and rise in our lives as we intentionally draw closer in our orbit to the One who has created, redeems and sustains.

The wonder and beauty of the moon that I witnessed rising last evening was so BIG and amazing because it was so close. At times we can get caught up in meeting budgets and paying bills that we forget our resources for ministry are a byproduct of our life together as a community of faith; United in Christ, methodically making a difference in God’s world. Our prayer and efforts with you in these coming months is to move closer to God in ways that grow us to participate in rising generosity.

Something is stirring, and in this harvest season we want you to experience “Generosity Rising.”
