Run And Not Be Weary
Olympics and Faith 2016

I absolutely love the Olympic Games, watching people from around the world who have honed their mind and body to such a high degree. The Olympics bring a sense of team work, stunning feats of poise, endurance, strength, speed and often heroic stories. Today’s Olympic Games began in 1896 but it is astonishing that the original Olympic Games started in ancient Greece in the 7th century before Christ (BC). They were held every four years, almost continually for 1,200 years. They continued until 393 AD when Roman Emperor Theodosius ended the Ancient Games.

The ancient history of the “games” means that the Apostle Paul lived in a time when the Olympics were happening and some of our New Testament passages and images reflect this.

1 Corinthians 9:24-26 (NRSV)
Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it.  Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one. So I do not run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air

2 Tim 2:1-2,5
You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus; and what you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well.  And in the case of an athlete, no one is crowned without competing according to the rules.

2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NRSV)
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Hebrews 12:1-3 (NRSV)
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses (like Olympic track stadium), let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely,[and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,  looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith

These are only a few of the New Testament verses that draw upon the Olympic Games…can you find some more?

Certainly we are thrilled at the stunning performances of star athletes like Simone Biles and Michael Phelps. Both these individuals have life stories that deal with struggles of addiction and grace. In addition to these two, there are many other stories of courage and perseverance often woven in with strong strands of the strength of the human spirit and power of faith in God.

Frank Molinaro, a South Jersey wrestler and Yusra Mardini, Syrian refugee who saved 20 people by pushing their boat for three hours, are just two individuals whose stories of faith and courage have touched me during these 2016 Olympics. There are so many other men and women from around the world who gathered to compete in Rio who have powerful stories of courage, faith and discipline.

Every Olympics I wonder why, on this small globe where we all live, we can’t we work together to care for ALL the children? Why can’t we build more schools and hospitals and healthy communities and countries instead of creating terrorism and war?

The good news is that as United Methodists, we are all around the world!

The best advice comes from Paul; I keep pressing on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:14). We need to keep practicing our faith daily with the discipline of an Olympic athlete, as we share God’s love, peace and joy with the world.
