Poetry & Pose
You do not have to be good. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. ~Mary Oliver
How do we use our yoga practice and our own unique creative voice to awaken and deepen our humanity, our spirituality, and our creativity—especially in a world that challenges us with how to reconcile the space between the sacred life and the secular? How do we hold space for the “both” and “and” that welcomes all of who we are, rather than hardening into a stance of “either/or?”
In this class, we will integrate a slow-flow, alignment focused, mindfulness-based yoga practice with a themed poem and intentional writing prompts. Moving mindfully and deepening our connection to ourselves on the mat has a resonant meditative quality, one that can support our healing and inspire our creative expression. Mindful movement is directly linked to the processes of neuroplasticity & interoception; these processes allow holding patterns in the mind/body to be reshaped over time in order to move from a place of “dukah” (discomfort) to “sukah” (good space). By way of this expansion, we can deepen our embodied awareness alongside a sense of compassionate witness. Creative expression from this place allows us to further integrate the material of our lives into a deepened sense of wholeness as we listen and give language to the wisdom voice of the body.
This holistic approach integrates body-based and contemplative creative practices to support our sense of wholeness and beauty. It invites us to bring all of ourselves to our practice, and allows us to bring more compassionate observation with us into our lives off the mat. In addition to supporting ourselves as individuals, this practice further enhances what it means to create embodied social change in an equal parts beautiful and overwhelming 21st century world.
Your own unique voice is your poetry. Come nourish body, mind,
spirit & heart.
