Easter Holiday Activities

Over the Easter long weekend our campers got involved in several activities at Portarlington Holiday Park provided by our hard-working park staff. On Easter Saturday a bonnet making session was held in Arthur's recreation room. Easter Sunday saw campers queuing for some freshly toasted hot cross buns. Left over hot cross buns were delivered to families throughout the park by our Easter bunnies Leigh and Peter.
After everyone was full on hot cross buns, an Easter Bonnet parade showcased all the wonderful creations made during the craft session on Saturday. Several prizes were awarded but unfortunately we couldn't give everyone a prize. There were some terrific bonnets on display which made the judging extremely difficult!
Finally, here is the lucky winner of our 'Guess how many Easter eggs in the jar' competition. Mr Love from Mitcham, who holidayed with us in a cabin, correctly guessed 168 eggs! Congratulations Mr Love we hope you shared the love...and your spoils.

Beach Profiling on our Coast

Over the past two years Bellarine Bayside has installed 20 survey posts in an effort to better understand our highly dynamic coastal environment. This enables an ongoing, standardised monitoring program to measure beach profiles. Seven of these markers focus on the Portarlington foreshore area. Each marker provides a benchmark that is used to determine sand movement with time. When compared with each other we can illustrate sand movement across space.

Grades 3 & 4 at Portarlington Primary School have taken measurements twice at their post, situated on the foreshore near the Portarlington Pier.

If you are interested in learning more about beach profile monitoring or you would like to assist with the collection of data at your local beach please contact our Coastal Projects Officer on 5254 4010 or email

Environmental Education with St Leonards Primary School

St Leonards Primary School participated in an environment day on 24 March 2016 with Bellarine Bayside and Bellarine Catchment Network on the foreshore to the west of Bengalat Reserve (formerly Area 3).

Eighty students participated in three fun and interactive activities on the day including

  • exploring the unique marine and coastal biodiversity of Port Phillip Bay
  • learning about the key role vegetation plays in maintaining healthy habitats, and
  • the challenges our environment faces now and into the future.

At the end of the day, each student made a commitment to help the local environment. Examples of commitments include "picking up rubbish and planting things", "putting dog poo in the bin", and "caring and loving the environment".

Portarlington Primary School will participate in their own environmental education day with Bellarine Bayside on 22 April 2016.

ANZAC Day Service

Portarlington & St Leonards sub-branch RSL will be holding an ANZAC Day service at the Cenotaph behind the rotunda in Portarlington commencing at 11am. Bellarine Bayside participates in this service each year to commemorate those who served our nation.

Off-season Projects

With the summer holiday season drawing to a close the seasonal camping grounds will soon be decommissioned and returned to foreshore reserves for the off-season. The last of our seasonal campers are due to depart on Monday 25 April and this will signal the commencement of extensive foreshore works along the coast including:
  • mulching of garden beds in preparation for planting
  • installation of drains at Anderson Reserve
  • turf maintenance at Batman Park
  • general site maintenance and removal of powerheads
  • refurbishment of toilet block 4 in Portarlington Holiday Park.
Work will also commence on the Indented Head and St Leonards boat ramps towards the end of 2016. State funding was announced for these upgrades in February (read more here) and the tender will be advertised in May.

Safe Harbour Update

Dredging works will commence this week. Routine dredging of Portarlington Harbour is required to remove sand which has accumulated in the harbour through natural coastal processes. Dredging Portarlington Harbour is also required to improve boat access to the harbour and the new commercial berthing jetty being built to the east of the pier. The dredge will be located in the harbour and pumping discharge points will begin at the pier and move gradually towards the holiday park to 1000 metres west of the pier. A fact sheet is available here.

The construction of the rock breakwater is well under way as shown in the photo at left. Rocks are still being delivered along Fisher St and across The Esplanade, so please proceed along this area with caution. Spectators are reminded to stay clear of the construction site and  remain behind the safety fencing.

Penguins on our Beaches

There have been recent media reports of a spike in fairy penguin deaths along the coast and It is possible that we may see penguins on the Northern Bellarine shoreline in coming weeks. Although the exact cause is unknown, higher than average breeding seasons in nearby colonies may have displaced fledgling penguins or deprived them of food. If you do come across any injured and/or distressed penguins please contact the AGL Marine Response Unit (Zoos Victoria) on 1300 245 678. Please do not handle injured or sick penguins without appropriate equipment.
