Bellarine Bayside e-News

Welcome to the June edition of our e-News.

The long weekend saw the arrival of many national and international visitors to the region for the National Celtic Festival. Bellarine Bayside was once again delighted to be a Principal Community Partner of the event. We partnered with the National Celtic Festival in offering a discounted ticket and camping package which saw the holiday park quite busy at a relatively quiet time of the year. We hope everyone had a fantastic weekend and we look forward to doing it all again next year.

We hope you are enjoying our e-News!

Pt Richards Flora and Fauna Reserve

The Friends of Pt Richards Flora and Fauna Reserve received funds in 2015 from Bellarine Bayside that were allocated towards the construction of a picnic rotunda at the Pt Richards Rd entrance to the reserve.

The structure is built from 100-year-old wharf pylons to complement the natural surroundings and picturesque views within the reserve. A selection of walking tracks can be accessed from the rotunda making it the perfect starting point to explore the rich history and ecological significance of the local area. It is the perfect habitat for the endangered Growling Grass Frog and we encourage visitors to keep an eye out for this and other frogs that inhabit the reserve.

Meet Our Staff - Leia Howes
Coastal Projects Officer
Leia joined Bellarine Bayside as Coastal Projects Officer in August 2015. Her role is multifaceted, which presents both a professional challenge and opportunity. The main objective of her work is to assist in the design and implementation of coastal management projects that improve the condition of built and natural assets under Bellarine Bayside management. For example, the Indented Head Community Hall upgrade, the installation of timber groynes at Indented Head and beach monitoring. Leia is also responsible for the design and implementation of our summer activities and school education programs. Before arriving at Bellarine Bayside nine months ago, Leia worked in grass-roots coastal conservation in the Philippines for three years. Leia was born and raised on the Northern Bellarine, is passionate about her work and actively seeks to engage the community  in the sustainable management of our beautiful coast.
Congratulations to Bellarine Catchment Network
Bellarine Catchment Network has been announced as a finalist in the 2016 Sustainable Cities Awards (City of Greater Geelong) in the Litter Prevention category for their Caring For Our Bays - Litter Hotspot Program. The Sustainable Cities awards encourage, motivate and celebrate sustainability achievements of metropolitan communities across Australia.

Bellarine Bayside would like to congratulate Bellarine Catchment Network on their achievement and wish them well at the ceremony to be held at the State Library of Victoria on Friday 15 July 2016.

Let's stamp out Ramp Rage!
Bellarine Bayside is concerned about recent reports of ramp rage at boat ramps along the Northern Bellarine. We understand that everyone wants to get in or out of the water as quickly as possible, but it is important to be patient, particularly during busy times. There are always going to be new boaties who haven't yet mastered the art of getting their boat in the water quickly, but with practise and maybe some guidance, they will improve. If you see someone struggling, offer to help rather than becoming frustrated and vocal. Being vocal and aggressive will not get them in the water any faster. Boat ramp rage doesn’t have to be a part of the boating experience, especially if we all pull together and apply a bit of common sense. Remember everyone was a beginner once!

New Website Launch - Sneak Peek!
We are excited to be launching our new website before the end of June. Our website has been designed to integrate the two current websites (Coastal Management and Holiday Parks). This new website will retain the current holiday parks URL (www.bellarinebayside.com.au) and online bookings will be available in the near future. The website (see screenshot at right) has the same design as our current holiday park brochures (downloadable below) that were launched at the beginning of the year. We'd like to thank our web designers, Paul Kelly Creative, for the fantastic job they have done. We hope you all enjoy the new, user-friendly website that has a fresh, modern feel with links to information relevant to the Northern Bellarine.
