This morning, the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) published the Investor Office report Behavioural Insights: Key Concepts, Applications and Regulatory Considerations (OSC Staff Notice 11-778).

Behavioural insights recognize how people actually behave versus traditional economic and market theory of people as rational actors. This report describes key principles and concepts of behavioural insights and examines how leading practitioners are using these insights to improve government policy and regulation. The report also includes a detailed review of how various regulators around the world are applying these concepts to address financial market issues and improve investor and market participant outcomes.

“It is clear that applying behavioural insights to financial policy-making and regulation has benefits for investors and market participants alike,” said Tyler Fleming, Director of the Investor Office at the OSC. “Understanding human behaviour enables regulators to better comprehend, diagnose and address market issues.”

Key Behavioural Concepts
There are numerous factors that influence the decisions that people make. Behavioural insights recognizes this and, through a combination of psychology, economic and more recently other behavioural research, examines how people are often neither deliberate nor rational in their decisions in the way that traditional models, strategies and policies assume. Read this article to learn about some select key behavioural concepts.
