Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and love is in the air.

Some fraudsters take advantage of this by targeting potential victims through online dating platforms. If you meet someone online but have not seen them in-person, and they begin to ask you for money, it’s likely a scam.

A romance scam is when a fraudster, often using a fake dating profile, lures victims into trusting them and asks for money giving various excuses. Read our new article to learn how you can protect yourself from romance scams


RRSP Season

Last year, the Investor Office launched to educate people on cryptoasset products and services, the OSC’s role in regulating them, and tips for exercising due diligence. We also created which mimics what a typical fraudulent initial coin offering website may look like to help people recognize potential red flags. As indicated in our previous edition of Investor News, the OSC recently published OSC Staff Notice 11-784: Burden Reduction, which seeks suggestions on reducing regulatory burden with a focus on eliminating unnecessary or outdated rules and processes while protecting investors and the integrity of Ontario’s capital markets. The Notice outlines plans to broadly consult Ontario market participants on ways to further reduce regulatory burden as well as on improving the investor experience.

The OSC will hold a roundtable discussion on reducing regulatory burden on March 27, 2019. Anyone wishing to participate in the discussion at the roundtable should submit a comment letter and expressly indicate a desire to participate.

The consultation follows the OSC’s November 2018 establishment of a Burden Reduction Task Force.

The deadline to submit comments is March 1, 2019.




Proposed trading fee rebate pilot study

The Canadian Securities Administrators published for comment CSA Staff Notice and Request for Comment 23-323 Trading Fee Rebate Pilot Study, which seeks input on a proposed pilot study that would apply temporary pricing restrictions on marketplace transaction fees applicable to trading in certain securities.

Investor Office Telephone Townhall

Telephone townhalls are a way for the Investor Office to connect with thousands of Ontarians at a time, in the comfort of their own home. Telephone townhalls work much like a call-in radio show where OSC staff provide information, answer questions and conduct live polls over the course of one hour.

The next telephone townhall is being held as part of Fraud Prevention Month.
